Linfield Captures NCAA Title with 10-2 Victory Over Washington Univeristy

SALEM, VA – Linfield College claimed its first NCAA Division III Softball Championship with a 10-2 victory over Washington University in Salem, Virginia Tuesday afternoon.

The win gives Linfield a final 2007 record of 44-7 while the Bears end their season at 35-7.

The Wildcats jumped on the board early, scoring four first inning runs. Stephanie Rice tripled to open up the frame and came home when Jenny Marshall followed with a single. Brunette then followed with a two run homer. Amanda Attleberger then smacked her first home run of the day with one out in the inning.

Washington got on the board in the second inning when Ashton Hitchcock hit a solo home run off LC starter Brittany Miller.

Linfield answered right back - scoring a single run in the second inning and three runs in the third inning - behind homeruns from Attleberger and Lisa Smith, making the score 8-2 after three innings of play.

The score remained that way until the bottom of the sixth inning when Marshall and Brunette had back-to-back singles with one out. Jenna Loop then delivered a single which scored both Marshall and Brunette and gave Linfield its first National Championship.

Miller earned the win in the circle for Linfield after going the distance, scattering eight hits, allowing two runs and striking out six to pick up her 24th win of the year and her fourth win of the National Championship round.

Laurel Sagartz took the loss for Washington, after starting and going two innings and surrendering eight runs. The loss drops her record to 26-3 on the season.

Attleberger (1B), Loop (C), Miller and Rice (OF) were named to the all-tournament team from Linfield while Washington was represented by Karli Stander (OF), Jamie Kressel (3B) and Sagartz.

Wisconsin Eau Claire’s Mallory McKinney (DP), Mandy Tschprnach (SS) and Casey Leisgang (2B) were also named to the all-tournament team. Shannon Connors (OF) and Amy Woo (2B) of Plattsburg State were also named to the team along with Ali Braverman (2B) of the Emory.
