Men's Tennis Heads into Semifinal Matches

Roanoke to Host Final Two Rounds

SALEM, Va. – The semifinals and championship of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Championship are scheduled for Saturday-Sunday, April 21-22 on the campus of Roanoke College.

The tournament is in its first year of a new format featuring team dual matches to determine the conference automatic qualifier for the NCAA DIII Men’s Tennis Championship Tournament, which begins in two weeks.

Washington and Lee University entered the tournament as the number-one seed after cruising through the regular season conference schedule with a 9-0 mark. The Generals are currently ranked 17th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III poll, and recently defeated #13 Carnegie Mellon in a non-conference match in the middle of the week. W&L is looking to capture its 12th straight ODAC title, but it'll have to first go through Hampden-Sydney in Saturday's first semifinal at 11:00 a.m. The Generals advanced to the semifinals by way of a 5-1 victory over #8 Eastern Mennonite on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers defeated Bridgewater their opening match, winning 6-3.

Last year’s runner-up Roanoke College is the number two seed and tournament host. The Maroons enter the semifinal round with a 8-1 conference record and 14-6 overall mark. After defeating Emory & Henry 7-0 in its first round match up, the Roanoke must contest with a dangerous Virginia Wesleyan squad in the semis.  the third-seeded Marlins faced the Maroons only six days ago, with Roanoke coming out on top 6-3.  Virginia Wesleyan made its way past Guilford in the first round, defeating the Quakers 5-1.

The winners of the two semifinals will meet in the ODAC championship on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.  That match will also be held at Roanoke College.
