Roanoke to Host Final
Two Rounds
SALEM, Va. – The
semifinals and championship of the Old Dominion
Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Championship are
scheduled for Saturday-Sunday, April 21-22 on the
campus of Roanoke College.
The tournament is in its
first year of a new format featuring team dual
matches to determine the conference automatic
qualifier for the NCAA DIII Men’s Tennis
Championship Tournament, which begins in two weeks.
Washington and Lee
University entered the tournament as the number-one
seed after cruising through the regular season
conference schedule with a 9-0 mark. The Generals
are currently ranked 17th in the latest
Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III
poll, and recently defeated #13 Carnegie Mellon in a
non-conference match in the middle of the week. W&L
is looking to capture its 12th straight
ODAC title, but it'll have to first go through
Hampden-Sydney in Saturday's first semifinal at
11:00 a.m. The Generals advanced to the semifinals
by way of a 5-1 victory over #8 Eastern Mennonite on
Sunday afternoon. The Tigers defeated Bridgewater
their opening match, winning 6-3.
Last year’s runner-up
Roanoke College is the number two seed and
tournament host. The Maroons enter the semifinal
round with a 8-1 conference record and 14-6 overall
mark. After defeating Emory & Henry 7-0 in its first
round match up, the Roanoke must contest with a
dangerous Virginia Wesleyan squad in the semis.
the third-seeded Marlins faced the Maroons only six
days ago, with Roanoke coming out on top 6-3.
Virginia Wesleyan made its way past Guilford in the
first round, defeating the Quakers 5-1.
The winners of the two
semifinals will meet in the ODAC championship on
Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. That match will
also be held at Roanoke College.
