Washington & Lee Vies for Its
Fifth Consecutive ODAC Title
SALEM, Va. – Championship
play in the the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Women’s
Tennis Championship is scheduled for Friday-Sunday,
April 20-22, on the campus of Washington and Lee
University.
Matches begin on Friday with team
dual play-ins slated to begin at 9am. Three separate
sites will be utilized for tournament play, including
the Washington and Lee upper and lower courts adjacent
to Wilson Field and the tennis facility at nearby
Virginia Military Institute.
The tournament is in its first
year of a new format featuring team dual matches to
determine the conference automatic qualifier for the
NCAA DIII Women’s Tennis Championship Tournament, which
begins in two weeks.
Washington and Lee University
(17-1 overall) enters the tournament as the number-one
seed after cruising through the regular season
conference schedule with a perfect 9-0 mark. The
Generals are currently ranked first in the latest
Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III
poll. W&L is looking to capture its 17th ODAC
women's title. The Generals have finished as the
NCAA D-III runner-up each of the last two seasons and
three out of the past four. Senor Emily Applegate
returns to lead the squad into the ODAC postseason after
winning the national singles title in 2006 marking the
second straight year a General has finished tops in the
country.
Virginia Wesleyan (16-1 overall)
enters the three-day competition as the #2 seed. The
Marlins could be labeled the most improved squad in the
field after finishing the 2006 ODAC Tournament fourth
and posting an impressive 9-1 conference record in
2007. Junior Keira McMillon leads all conference singles
players with a perfect 13-0 mark while predominately
playing #3 for the Marlins.
