Bridgewater College (35-4) catcher Laura Barry put
the finishing touches on the Eagles' 9-1 victory
over Emory & Henry College (21-20) in the ODAC
Softball Championship with her fifth homer of the
season in the sixth inning.
Bridgewater moves on to play #3 Lynchburg College
(30-10) in the semifinals while the Wasps prepare
for # Roanoke College (29-8) in the lower half of
the bracket.
While Barry's homer
capped a strong scoring night for the Eagles,
offense was tough to come by in the opening frames.
Neither team could punch through in the first two
innings, with pitchers Shannon Harris for E&H and
Lisa Rhodes for Bridgewater keeping hitters under
control.
Emory & Henry got
on the board first in the third inning when Raegen
Clarke came around to score an unearned run off a
single by Dana Dettmar. Bridgewater quickly
knotted the score 1-1 in the bottom half of the
inning. After Jennifer Hall singled and stole
second, Lindsay Ware sent a flier to centerfield
that was muffed, allowing Hall to come in from
second.
Bridgewater added
two more tallies in the fourth inning. An
error by the shortstop allowed the first run to
cross the dish, and a walk of Ware with the bases
loaded plated Kate Reitz.
The Eagles broke
the game open in the fifth frame, scoring five times
to take a commanding 8-1 lead. A throwing
error by the third baseman with the bases loaded
allowed two runs to score, and Reitz plated another
pair with a single to left just two batters later.
Pinch runner Jessica Dunn scored the final run of
the inning when she scampered home from third on a
wild pitch from hurler Megan Evans.
Barry ended the
game in the sixth inning with a high fence-clearing
shot to left field.
Rhodes earned the
victory for Bridgewater, improving her season record
to 16-1. She game up three hits in six innings
of work, walking one and striking out two.
Evans took the loss
for the Wasps and she surrendered four hits and
seven runs, one earned, in 1.2 innings pitched.
