SALEM, Va. ---
Bridgewater College (36-5) made up for its early
Saturday mishap with its second victory of the
tournament over Emory & Henry College (23-21),
defeating the Wasps 7-1 in the 2007 Old Dominion
Athletic Conference Softball Championship. The
Eagles will square off with Lynchburg College
(32-10) in Sunday’s league title game at 1:00 p.m.
at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex in Salem,
Virginia.
Emory & Henry got on the board in the top half of
the first thanks to a Bridgewater fielding error.
Jamie Roy opened the game with a single back up the
box, and came home a batters later on a miscue at
first base by the Eagles.
Bridgewater jumped right back with three in the
bottom of the frame, beginning with Kate Reitz
doubling and coming around on a single by Lindsay
Ware. Kaitlyn Bowman walked, moving Ware to second
and allowing Laura Barry to drive her in with a
single to left-center for a 2-1 advantage. One
batter later, Bowman motored home from second on a
single by Caity Butler.
Bowman hit the first of two Bridgewater homers in
the bottom of the third inning, crashing one to deep
left-center field to extend the Eagles’ lead to
4-1.
Things unraveled a bit for the Wasps in the fourth
inning as three errors led to just as many runs for
the Eagles. Hall, who singled to third and advanced
all the way to third on a throwing error, jogged in
followed a mistake at second base that put Reitz on
the base paths. The third error, this time by the
shortstop, put Ware on first with Retiz moving all
the way to third base. Bowman walked to load the
bases, and Barry followed with another free pass to
force in the inning’s second run.
Barry accounted for the final run of the game,
hitting her sixth homer of the season.
