LYNCHBURG, Va. ---  Bridgewater College (18-20) right-hander Ricky Read out-dueled Lynchburg College (21-17) hurler Jason Kelly for a 2-1 complete game victory in the final first round contest of the 2007 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Baseball Championship.

Read, the 2006 ODAC Player of the Year, fanned 11 batters in nine full innings of work to earn his sixth win of the season.  He allowed only five hits and one earned run while surrendering one free pass.  Lynchburg’s Jason Lee was nearly as good during his 7.2 innings on the hill.  He gave up four hits without a free pass and striking out eight.  He gave up two runs in the fifth inning, but only one earned.

Both pitchers started the game lights out with neither allowing a hit until Read helped his own cause with a single through the right side with two down in the fourth inning.  Prior to that hit, Kelly had struck out five Eagles with four straight frozen on called third strikes.

Bridgewater punched through first in the top of the fifth inning.  Jono Brooks led off the frame with a double to right-center and scored two batters later on a two-base error by the Hornets’ shortstop.  Drew Elkins, who reached base on the miscue, advanced to third on a Lynchburg balk and then scored on Read’s second single of the game, this one to right field.

Lynchburg got one back in the bottom of the seventh.  Jon Crews started the inning with a single through the left side.  Two batters later, Justin Kelly singled to right center which allowed Crews to lumber home all the way from first.

Bridgewater maintains its spot in the winners side of the double-elimination bracket, and will face #2 Hampden-Sydney College at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 27.  Lynchburg must win in its second contest to remain in the field.  The Hornets take on Virginia Wesleyan College at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.  All games are played at Lynchburg’s City Stadium.
