Hadra Tosses Complete Game
April 27, 2007 -
Box Score
LYNCHBURG, Va. ---
Hampden-Sydney College (24-16) starter Daniel Hadra
scattered six hits through nine innings on the hill
to put the Tigers in the driver’s seat through the
remainder of the tournament with a 7-0 over
Bridgewater College (18-21) in the 2007 Old Dominion
Athletic Conference Baseball Championship.
Hadra’s effort marked his first shutout of the
season and the second complete game. Aside from the
six hits allowed, Hadra walked only one batter while
striking out nine. He set the Eagles down in order
for separate innings including, the eighth and ninth
innings, and struck out the side in the fourth.
Hampden-Sydney put five runs on the board in the
first three innings. David Toney drove in Luke
Swiney with a single to center just before he was
caught making too wide a turn at first base for the
third out in the inning.
The
Tigers put two on the board in the second frame,
loading the bases with one out. Daniel Prieto drove
in the first run with a single to right field.
Swiney followed with a line shot the other way down
the left field line for a double to bring in Anthony
Denale.
Two
more HSC tallies lit up the scoreboard in the third
inning. Designated hitter Ben Brawley chased
starter Nolan Shaffer from the game with an RBI
triple to deep center that scored Toney from first
base. Brawley crossed the dish two batters later on
Ryan Daniel’s single to left fied.
Neither team could crack each other’s pitching in
the middle innings as Hadra and reliever Justin
Folks controlled the game. Hampden-Sydney did tack
on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. Brawley
scored his second run of the game on a fielder’s
choice back to the mound with the bases loaded.
John Apperson scored the second run on a delayed
steal of second base in which Denale intentionally
got himself into a run-down between first and
second, forcing the Eagle defense to make a decision
on which out to make. It turned out neither was
made as the throw home was too late to get Apperson.
With five teams left in the tournament field,
Hampden-Sydney has the advantage as the only team
remaining without a loss. The Tigers will play at
7:00 p.m. on Saturday against the winner of the
11:00 a.m. contest between #1 Virginia Wesleyan
College and Bridgewater. All games are played at
City Stadium in Lynchburg.
