Hornets Collect 20 Hits, Score in Each Inning

LYNCHBURG, Va. --- The
Lynchburg College (23-17) offensive exploded against
Washington & Lee University (18-14), collecting 20
hits and scoring at least one run in each inning on
the way to a 14-2 victory in the 2007 Old Dominion
Athletic Conference Baseball Championship.
All
but one Hornet who stepped to the dish recorded at
least one hit. First baseman Jon Crews went 5-for-5
with four doubles, three runs score and two runs
batted in. Catcher Justin Kelly added three hits to
his tournament experience including two more doubles
while driving in four runs.
Lynchburg put five runs on the board in the first
inning, forcing starter Charles Davidson from the
game before the Generals could get out of the
inning. The Hornets pounded out six hits and
benefited from only one W&L error in posting its
five runs. Kelly cracked one of his two-baggers to
drive in a pair of runs. Mark Carlson had an RBI
single and Kyle Bradley pushed one in by walking
with the bases loaded.
The
Hornets’ second outburst came in the fifth inning.
Lynchburg hammered out four more hits on the way to
three runs. Jeff Taylor drove in a run with a
single to left field, and Crews followed a few
batters later with a two-run double also to left.
Washington & Lee’s best chance to change the scope
of the game came in the second inning. The Generals
worked the bases loaded with one out courtesy of a
trio of a singles by James Madden, Andrew Henderson
and Clayton Edwards. John Ditore picked an RBI by
walking to force in a run, but it would be the only
tally Washington & Lee would record as the Hornets
were able to work out of the jam.
Terrence McKelvey collected two of the seven hits
for the Generals including a double to lead off the
third inning. Catcher Jordan Wesley picked up the
RBI on W&L’s second run.
Joe
Devlin went six innings for the win. He allowed one
run on five hits while walking one an striking out
three. Conner Thompson and Rich Glover each worked
scoreless innings. Evan Durrer gave up a run in his
inning of work.
Bridgewater will have to wait until after the 7:00
p.m. game to determine the opponent and situation of
its Sunday contest. The outcome has a direct effect
on not only the possible number of games, but also
whether the day’s first game will be force the ODAC
