Greene’s Complete Game Paves Way

LYNCHBURG, Va. ---
Hampden-Sydney College (25-17) got another strong
starting pitching performance to catapult itself
into the title game, defeating Lynchburg College
(23-18) 3-2 in the semifinals of the 2007 Old
Dominion Athletic Conference Baseball Championship.
The
Tigers will take on Bridgewater College in the
championship game, facing the Tigers for the third
time in the tournament. On Friday night,
Hampden-Sydney shutout the Eagles 7-0, but
Bridgewater made amends with a 13-5 win on Saturday
night to earn is spot in the title game.
Larry Greene tossed a complete game against
Lynchburg to write Hampden-Sydney into the other
side of the championship box score. In nine full
innings of work, Greene gave up two runs while
scattering five hits and walking one batter. He
struck out six Hornets.
The
Tigers jumped on the board first in the second
inning. John Apperson opened the inning with a
single through the right side and made his way to
third base with a pair of stolen bases. Daniel
Prieto followed two batters later with a line shot
back up the middle to bring in Apperson.
Lynchburg tied the score in the third inning. Mark
Carlson led off the inning with a walk and was
sacrificed to second by Jonathan Sewell. After
Matthew Winston was hit by a pitch, Kyle Bradley
followed with a single that bounded through the
right side of the infield to bring in Carlson.
Prieto picked up his second and third runs batted in
during the fourth inning. David Toney reached on an
error by the shortstop to open the frame, and moved
to second on a sacrifice bunt by Apperson. Todd
Harrell followed with a single through the right
side to put runners on first and third for Prieto.
After Harrell stole second, Prieto came through
with a single to right to plate Toney and Harrell.
The
Hornets got one back in the sixth inning. Bradley
led off the inning with a double to right and move
up to third on a bunt single by Jeff Taylor.
Bradley scored on the next play, albeit a double
play hit into by Ronnie LaBrie.
The
ODAC championship game is set for 4:05 p.m. in
Lynchburg’s City Stadium.
