Stang
Sets New UW-Whitewater Record
May 17, 2008
SALEM, Va. --- UW-Whitewater was led
to a 4-1 victory over Rhode Island by
Warhawk pitcher, Jessica Stang.
Stang allowed just four hits and one run
en route to her thirteenth victory of
the season. Stang notched seven
strikeouts on the afternoon which
allowed her to set a new UW-Whitewater
record with 141 strikeouts in a single
season.
"I actually wasn’t," said
Stang on whether or not she was
expecting to break the single season
record. "I had no idea. I’m just
glad that we won. That is the most
important thing; to keep playing and
take it game by game."
The Warhawks
jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the
bottom of the third inning. In the
first frame, UW-Whitewater scored on a
single by Amy Gahl. The Warhawks
scored again in the second inning off of
another single by Gahl. Next,
Meghann Brennfleck hit her fourth home
run of the season and drove in two
Warhawk base runners.
Rhode
Island's one run came in the sixth
inning after Cassandra Taverna slapped a
single to center field.
In the
circle for the Anchorwomen, relief
pitcher Melanie Neece threw 4.2 innings
and allowed four hits and two runs.
"If there is any bright
spot to the loss today, you look to the
future and the future remains bright.
They played a fabulous year and we had
contributions from everyone up and down
that lineup. It’s not a one person
thing, it’s a team. The kids play with
their heart every single day. Again and
again we came out on top. From our three
seniors I thank them for a wonderful
career and for helping put Rhode Island
college on a national map, it’s really
because of them," said Maria Morin, head
coach for Rhode Island.
UW-Whitewater (36-10) will return to the
field at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday and will
face the loser of the #3 WU-Eau Claire
and #7 Muskingum game. Rhode
Island bows out of the tournament with a
39-12 overall record on the
season.
