Survive to Play Another Day
May 17, 2008
SALEM, Va. --- Ithaca
had two strong innings that sealed the
deal for their victory of Lynchburg in
the 2008 NCAA Division III Softball
Championship on Saturday.
In the second inning, Jessica Stangarone
drilled a single to center field and
drove in Samantha Corrado for the
Bombers first score. Then Erica
Cutspec sent another single to center
field, allowing for Stangarone to round
the bases to home.
In the fourth
frame, Stagerone scored on a fielders
choice by Allison Greaney. Then
Cutspec was brought home when Kerry
Barger grounded out to second base to
make the score 4-0, which stuck until
the end of the game.
"I was just
trying to contribute as much as I can,"
said Cutspec on her big hits of the
afternoon. "Especially when there
are runners on base I want to put the
ball in play and hopefully good things
will happen."
Nicole Cade
cleaned up in the circle for the
Bombers. Cade pitched a
complete-game shutout and allowed only
five hits on the afternoon.
Lynchburg
was lead offensively by Tara Campbell
who went 2-for-3 at the plate. The
Hornets tallied five hits in the game,
but could not find the runs to answer
the Bombers.
Katie Bruce
pitched five innings and allowed seven
hits and four runs for the Hornets.
Ithaca
(35-11) will return to action on Sunday
at noon and will face the loser of the
#1 Louisiana College and #4 Cortland
State game. Lynchburg bows out of
the tournament with a 39-8 overall
record on the season.
