BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Jon Crews, Lynchburg College
Crews, a senior from Lynchburg, Virginia,
enjoyed a lot of success this week, as he was 6-11 (.545) with four doubles and a homerun. In the first game against R-MC Saturday, Crews was 3-4 with five RBI and two runs scored, blasting his fourth homer of the season. Crews reached base in 10 of his 15 plate appearances, also extending his hitting streak to a team-best eight games. Out of the 24 games LC has played so far this year, Crews has hit safely in all but one.


BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Daniel Hadra, Hampden-Sydney College
Hadra, a senior from Mechanicsville, Virginia,
earned the complete-game win against Guilford in his only action on the week.  The right-hander threw seven scoreless innings against the Quakers, allowing only two hits while walking none.  Hadra also retired eight batters with strikeouts.
 

Baseball Honor Roll

Mike Graves, Bridgewater

Went 8-for-21, hitting safely in all five games played; scored four runs and drove in three more.

Fred Duquette, Bridgewater

Went the distance to earn the win over ranked Piedmont; gave up one run on five hits while fanning five.

Jeff Walker, Eastern Mennonite

Went 7-for-11 with a homer, three RBI and four runs scored for the Royals.

Phil Drew, Guilford

Collected seven hits in 13 at-bats including a 4-for-4 day in a loss to Hampden-Sydney; scored three runs.

Ryan Hairston, Guilford

Went 1-1 on the week, picking up a relief victory over Tufts; went six innings in a 2-0 loss to H-SC.

Alnor Rodriguez, Hampden-Sydney

Went 5-for-11 with a double, triple and two homers to go with four RBI; came a single away from the cycle in a 5-4 win over Guilford.

Joe Devlin, Lynchburg

Picked up a pair of wins, one in relief, throwing 7.1 innings of shutout ball; went five innings in a win over W&L.

Patrick Collins, Roanoke

Went 3-for-5 in split with Washington and Lee; had two homers including the game-winning grand slam to defeat the Generals in game two.

Jim Plantholt, Washington and Lee Picked up a save in game one vs. Roanoke, setting a new W&L record with 8 for his career; Went 7-for-9 from plate in the series.

 

 

GOLFER OF THE WEEK

Nathaniel James, Washington and Lee University
James, a senior from Keller, Texas,
helped lead the Generals to a ninth-place finish out of 26 teams at the Jekyll Island Invitational over the weekend by carding a 70-72-76—217 (+1).  Individually, James finished third overall, just six strokes behind champion Nick Bova of Methodist.  For the year, James is averaging 72.4 strokes over 13 rounds played.
 

Golf Honor Roll

Bob Boykin, Hampden-Sydney

Helped the Tigers into a tie for 10th at Jekyll Island with a 227 (76-75-76) 11-over-par score.

 

 

MEN'S LACROSSE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Ryan Cranston, Lynchburg College
Cranston, a senior from West Chester, Pennsylvania, posted six goals and four assists in a 2-0 week for the Hornets. In a 17-4 victory over Greensboro College on Wednesday, he posted two goals and two assists along with one groundball. In a 14-8 defeat over #15 ranked Villa Julie College, he posted four goals and one assist in the second half, along with one assist in the first half.

 

Men's Lacrosse Honor Roll

Todd Bochenek, Guilford

Scored three goals and notched three assists in an overtime loss to Sewanee.

Doug Carpenter, Hampden-Sydney

Scored four goals and picked up a trio of ground balls in a loss to Haverford.

Tyler Watkins, Randolph-Macon

Tallied four goals to go with four assists in a non-conference win over Mount St. Joseph.

Tom Skartsiaris, Virginia Wesleyan Made 36 saves over two games last week including a career-high and VWC all-time third-best 27 in a win over Roanoke; 20 saves came in the final 36 minutes against the Maroons.
Tim Skeen, Washington and Lee Scored two goals and dished out five assists in a win over Greensboro.

 

 

WOMEN'S LACROSSE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Emily Matthews, Washington and Lee University
Mathews,
a freshman from Baltimore, Maryland, tallied eight goals and one assist over a two-game week.  In a 14-9 win over Roanoke, Mathews notched a career-high five goals and in the victory over No. 19 McDaniel, she recorded three goals and one assist.  For the season, she has scored 12 goals to go with three assists.

 

Women's Lacrosse Honor Roll

Mary Hutchins, Guilford

Scored three times and assisted on four others in an 18-6 win over Greensboro.

Lindsay Gengras, Lynchburg

Notched five goals and four assists in a 1-2 week for the Hornets; also picked up 10 draw controls.

Emily Kent, Randolph-Macon

Scored three goals and helped on two others in a win over Sweet Briar.

Gina Valles, Roanoke

Had nine goals and one assist in an 0-2 week for the Maroons.

Stewart Hulfish, Sweet Briar Picked up two goals and a trio of assists in a loss to Randolph-Macon
Jillian Boyd, Virginia Wesleyan Scored nine goals, assisted on three others and registered 17 draw controls in a 2-1 week for the Marlins; also had 15 ground balls.

 

 

SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Drew Rutledge, Bridgewater College
Rutledge, a freshman from Brookneal, Virginia, hit .476 with a 1.047 slugging percentage in five games – all BC wins. Rutledge hit a walk-off two-run homer in a 9-7 victory over Gordon. She was 2-for-4 with a homer and a double in a 4-0 win over St. Joseph’s. She also was 2-for-4 with three RBIs in a win over Wisconsin-Plattesville. For the week she scored eight runs and had nine RBIs in five games to go along with three homers and three doubles.


SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Ally Eates, Virginia Wesleyan College
Eates, a freshman from Portsmouth, Virginia,
put together a 3-0 week that was part of a 6-0 week for Virginia Wesleyan.  She pitched three complete games, all shut outs for the Marlins.  She gave up only five hits in her three starts, which included a no-hit effort against Emory & Henry and a one-hitter against Sweet Briar.  Eates struck out five batters in the three games, which included a victory over Christopher Newport University.  Eates now owns an ERA of 0.68 and a record of 6-1, which includes five shut out wins. 

 

Softball Honor Roll

Lindsay Lam, Bridgewater

Went 3-0 on the Eagles spring break trip, giving up four runs, walking nine and fanning 13 in 18 innings of work.

Nicole Shelton, Eastern Mennonite

Went 5-for-9 with a double, triple and two RBI in a double-header sweep of Randolph.

Natasha Viafora, Eastern Mennonite

Went five innings while fanning six in game one vs. Randolph.

Ami Hutcherson, Guilford

Went 6-for-10 with four runs and two RBI in a 1-3 week; went 3-for-4 in a win over Meredith.

Taryn Pulvermuller, Guilford

Went 1-1, giving up seven runs (five earned) and seven walks while striking out nine in 13 innings in the circle.

Elizabeth Perkins, Lynchburg

Hit .333 last week with a home run, and six RBI. She had a .440 on-base percentage and a .524 slugging average.

Barbie Miles, Lynchburg

Posted a 3.20 ERA last week, splitting a pair of decisions.

Lindsay Wood, Randolph

Went 3-for-6 with two doubles, two runs and three RBI in a double-header loss to EMU.

Paige Smith, Randolph-Macon

Went 6-for-7 in a double-header sweep of Mary Baldwin; had a double, two homers, seven RBI and five runs scored.

Courtney Brooks, Randolph-Macon

Pitched seven innings of shutout ball, picking up a win with five innings of three-hit ball in game one vs. MBC; fanned seven batters.

Beth Anderson, Sweet Briar

Was one of only four Vixens to get a hit against VWC; also had an RBI.

Mandy Nixon, Virginia Wesleyan

Went 10-for-20 on the week, hitting safely in all six wins for the Marlins; had a double, triple, and homer to go with eight runs scored, five RBI and six steals.

 

 

MEN'S TENNIS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
William Moss, Hampden-Sydney College
Moss, a sophomore from Fredericksburg, Virginia and
the No. 1 singles hitter for Hampden-Sydney, scored a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Washington and Lee No. 1 and regionally ranked Tim Ross on Friday, March 21. Moss cruised in the first set, then overcame a 0-5 deficit, running off seven straight games to claim the win. In doubles, Moss teamed with Tigers’ No. 2 Rich Pugh to capture an 8-4 triumph over the Generals’ Ross and Jamie McCardell. Earlier in the week, Moss defeated Lynchburg No. 1 Kristian Richardson 6-0, 6-1 in Hampden-Sydney’s 9-0 victory on Thursday, March 20, and turned back Ferrum College’s Brandon Brown 6-0, 6-1. Moss was 3-0 on the week in both singles and doubles.

Ken's Tennis Honor Roll

Will Mason-Deese, Guilford

Went 3-1 at #4 singles action to help the Quakers to a 2-2 week; faced two regionally-ranked D-III schools, a D-I opponent and a D-II foe.

Jeff Johnson, Randolph Earned both points in a loss to Ferrum, winning at #2 singles and #1 doubles.
Nat Estes, Washington and Lee Went 3-1 at #2 singles and 4-0 at #2 doubles as he helped W&L to match wins in 4-of-5 meetings; Generals won five times last week.

 


WOMEN'S TENNIS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Lauren Caire, Washington and Lee University
Caire, a sophomore from Nashville, Tennessee,
Helped the Generals pick up a quartet of wins over the week and improve to 12-0 overall (9-0 ODAC). On the season, Caire is 15-1 overall in singles and 13-2 in doubles.

 

 

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Chris Word, Lynchburg College
Word, a sophomore from Lynchburg, Virginia,
qualified provisionally for national competition in three different events Saturday as the hornets hosted the LC Invitational. Word provisionally qualified for national competition in the 400, winning the 30-person event in 47.66 to rank second all-time in the event at LC. Both Hornet relay teams also provisionally qualified for nationals, as Word joined J.J. Johnson, Earl Graves and Brandon Edwards to win the 4x100 relay in 41.88. Word teamed with Will Tolbert, Edwards and Graves to qualify in the mile relay in 3:16.53.
 

Men's Track Honor Roll

Nathan Turner, Bridgewater

Won the shot put (50' 10.25") and the hammer (166' 10") and placed second in the discus (136' 11") at the Doc Jopson Invite.

Luke Yoder, Eastern Mennonite

Won the 800-meter run at the Jopson Invite for the 4th consecutive year with a time of 1:56.90; placed second in the 400 (51.07) and helped to first in the 4x400 relay (3:31.29).

Jason Taylor, Virginia Wesleyan

Set a pair of school records with a 22.58 in the 200-meter dash and a 50.98 in the 400-meter dash.

 

 

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Michelle Leaman, Eastern Mennonite University
Leaman, a sophomore from Broadway, Virginia,

set a new meet record at the Jopson Invitational in the women's 100 meter hurdles as she clocked in with a time of 15.29, breaking the school record as well.   Leaman broke the old record of 15.72 in the 100 meter hurdles while also moving to fourth on the EMU all-time list in the 100 meter dash, placing seventh overall in that event. Leaman also placed third in the women's 400 meter dash with a time of 1:03.55.
 

Women's Track Honor Roll

Christina Rhodes, Bridgewater

Set a new BC record in winning the pole vault with a jump of 10' 6" at the Doc Jopson Invite.

Kyra Richardson, Lynchburg

Ran times of 12.87 and 27.00 respectively in the 100 and 200-meter dashes to pace the women’s team at the Lynchburg College Invitational.

Ashley Roane, Virginia Wesleyan

Broke her own school record in the 10,000-meter run by nearly two minutes with a time of 39:46.90.

Elizabeth Webb, Washington and Lee

Ran a school-record and ODAC-leading time of 2:17.73 in the 800 meters, placing third at Emory.
