Lions escape with win over Bombers

Battle Creek, Michigan - The start of game was delayed one hour becasue of a thunder and lightning storm. Once the contest began, the thunder and lightning were in the bats of Trenton State Lions and Ithaca Bombers. Both teams wrapped out a total of 34 hits as the Lions earned a 14-10 victory.

Head Coack Rick Dell had praise for the eigth and ninth hitters in Trenton's win. "Those guys [Ed Yaris and Mike Nelson] get overlooked, but they are our links, " said Dell. "They have to hit to link the middle of the batting order with the top. They've combined to drive in 41 runs this year and that not too bad."

Trenton led 2-0, after the first inning with Jeff White's solo homer the big hit. Ithaca retaliated with four runs in the fourth to go up, 4-2. In the inning, Don Fortuna reached winning pitcher Howard Forman for a solo homer and Jeff Geller cracked a run scoring double , which tied it at 2-2. After a 30-minute rain delay, Ithaca took the lead on Dave Walton's sacrifice fly, followed by Rob Coleman's RBI single.

The Lions added three tuns in the fifth and took the lead for good with an eight-run outburst in the sixth, highlighted by All-American Dave Lebak's three-run home-run. In the sixth, Ken Wainczak singled twice and drove in a run and Jeff Nevitt drilled a two-run double.

Helping fuel the sixth inning outburst was an Ithaca error early on in the sixth. Ithaca committed four errors on the day and allowed nine unearned runs

Ithaca closed the gap with five runs in the seventh but was unable to overcome Trenton State's lead. Forman earned the win and John Goll came in in the ninth to shut the door on an Ithaca rally to earn the save. Ithaca's starting pitcher, Mike Santora, took the loss. Trenton State will face Marietta in the winners bracket and Ithaca moves on to face Wisconsin-Oshkosh, a 7-3 loser to Marietta.
