Battle Creek, Michigan - Dave Lebak connected for four hits and freshman Jon Conant pitched a four-hitter to lead Trenton State to a 4-1 victory over top-ranked Marietta in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship before 400 at Nichols Field.
Lebak, a First Team All-American, went four for five and is now seven for 11 in the series. The junior right fielder singled three times, doubled and drove in a run to raise his overall average to .402.
Lebak got his team started quickly by lining the first pitch of the game into left field for a single. After Mike Lepore bunted him to second, Jeff White unloaded his second homer of the series, a 415-foot shot over the right-centerfield fence.
Marietta cut Trenton's lead in half with a run in the second. Conant struck our Frank Antill on a curve, but Antill reached first when the ball bounced past catcher Jerry Tolomeo. After Dave Allen walked, a sacrifice put runners on second and third. Rob Springer flied to deep center to drive in Antill. Both pitchers, Conant and Aaron Emery of Marietta, then settled into a grove for the next three innings.
Trenton increased its lead to 3-1 in the seventh when Lebak stroked a one-out single that plated Ed Yaris. Yaris had singled with one out, moved to second when Mike Nelson walked and advanced to third on an errant pick-off throw. The final run was scored on Ken Wainczak's solo home run in the eighth
Conant stuck out nine and walked three for the complete game victory. Emery took the loss for Marietta.
"Everyone was saying it was a big game, but I just went into it as though it was another baseball game," said Conant. "I tried to put the fact that they were number one in the back of my mind."
Marietta will now play Wisconsin-Oshkosh, 5-0 winners against Ithaca. Trenton State advances to play the winner of the game between Marietta and Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the championship round.
