Battle Creek, Michigan - Three hours before game time at CO Brown Stadium, junior pitcher Drew Yocum said that he didn't want to wait any longer, that he was ready to pitch. He then took the mound and proved he was ready to pitch no matter what time it was. Yocum, now 8-0 this season, kept Carthage off balanced all day long in pitching his first complete game of the year, and senior Joe Critelli blasted a 2-0 pitch 400 feet over the right-center field wall for a two-run homer in the third. Montclair flicked away a late Redmen rally and downed Carthage 5-1 in game number three of the 1993 Division III College World Series.
Yocum, who retired 15 batters in a row entering the 9th inning, got into his only jam of the game as Carthage led off the inning with back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases with nobody out. After a trip to the mound, head coach Norm Schoenig kept Yocum in there, and the lefty induced the Redmen's leading hitter, Len Atkins into a 4-6-3 double-play for a run and two outs. Yocum then popped up the cleanup hitter and the game was over. "Drew was simply outstanding today," said Schoenig. "He set the tone of the game right away in the first inning, getting ahead of the hitters, and giving us a chance to swing the bats." Yocum, in throwing his third complete game of his career, said, "I felt good today, all day. Our hitters came out ripping early, so I just wanted Carthage to put the ball into play and let my defense do the work."
Offensively, Montclair got it going right away when Rob DiLaurenzio led off the game with a double to right-center. He was sacrificed over by Critelli and was knocked home by John Pallino with a sac-fly. In the third, Critelli plated two runs with his home run. Montclair padded the lead with an RBI single by Tony Martinez in the fifth and a RBI single in the eighth by Ralph Yezza. Martinez ended the game 3-4 with two runs scored.
"Winning this first game is key," added Martinez. "You don't win game one, you might as well pack your bags and go home." Right now, the Red Hawks are staying in Battle Creek.
