Salem, Virginia - Tom Canale allowed no earned runs and just four hits to lead Cal Lutheran to a 7-2 win over Cortland State in the opening game of the NCAA Division III Baseball Championships at Salem Baseball Stadium.
Canale, a sophomore, recorded nine strikeouts for his sixth complete game of the season and improved to 10-5.
Cal Lutheran wasted little time opening the scoring, as leadoff hitter Jeremy Schlosser smacked a first-pitch double to right field. Schlosser advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on an RBI ground out by Brian Malchow.
Schlosser helped to extend Cal Lutheran's lead in the second with a two-RBI bases-loaded single. The Kingsmen extended their lead to 5-0 in the third, posting three consecutive hits to open the inning.
"I thought we came out and took control of the game from the get go, especially with Schlosser's double to start the game," said Cal Lutheran head coach Marty Slimak. "Our guys were ready to play today."
Cortland State got its first hit off Canale in the fourth inning, as Scott Weston hit a single to right-center. Canale, who faced just one batter over the minimum in the opening three innings, then walked one before striking out back-to-back batters and forcing a pop-up to work out of the jam.
"We need to hit better and get things done in pressure hitting situations, or we are not going to beat anybody," said Cortland State coach Steve Owens. "You don't win NCAA games if you don't have hitters who drive in runs."
Cortland State starter Chris DiScala lasted just four and a third innings, and allowed a season-worst six runs while matching his shortest outing of the season.
After leaving the bases loaded in the sixth, Cortland State got on the board in the eighth inning. The Red Dragons recorded two runs in the eighth without the benefit of a hit. Three Cal Lutheran errors led to a pair of unearned runs in the frame.
"We had about three double play chances there and we booted every singe one," continued Slimak. "I think we just lost our focus."
Brad Smith, Nick Plancich, and Eric Medina, hitting in the five, six, and seven spots, combined to go 9-for-13 in the game with each recording three hits. Medina was 3-for-3 with two RBI to lead the way for the Kingsmen.
Cal Lutheran (32-12) advances in the winner's bracket and will play the winner of the North Carolina Wesleyan/Brandeis game tomorrow at 4 p.m. Cortland State (35-9) will face the N.C. Wesleyan/Brandeis loser at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
