Stokes, Big Innings, Lead William Paterson To Win

Deegan Sees Winning Streak Snapped

Salem, Virginia - Shaun Stokes scattered seven hits over nine innings and allowed just one run to lead William Paterson to a 7-1 win over Aurora in the third game of the NCAA Division III Baseball Championships this evening at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. The complete game-win was the third in as many games at the 1999 finals.

Stokes struck out four and walked just one for his sixth complete game of the season. After surrendering the run in the fourth he was nearly perfect over the final five innings, retiring 15 of the 16 batters who came to the plate.

"The key was Shaun threw his curve balls for strikes when he was behind in the count," said William Paterson catcher R.C. Renshaw. "That was the key for us today."

Aurora senior Matt Deegan suffered the loss, snapping a personal string of 22 wins without over a loss spanning all of his junior and senior seasons.

William Paterson got to Deegan in the first inning, as Mike Bellovich, Craig Cutler, and Matt Rozema hit three consecutive RBI singles to put the Pioneers up 3-0.

After giving up three in the opening frame, Deegan settled down and retired 12 of the next 13 batters. Deegan could not make it out of the sixth inning, allowing six consecutive batters to reach base. Jack Lipari led off the inning with a standup triple, and Bellovich, Robert Riley and Dan Torres all hit RBI singles in the inning.

"I did not know Deegan had 22 straight wins," said WPU coach Jeff Albies. "It is a credit to our guys that we were able to go out there and do what we did today."

Aurora got its only run off Stokes in the fourth inning. Jeremy Seyller led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Bob Grapenthien's sacrifice fly.

"When we did get hits, Stokes was able to wiggle out," said Aurora coach Mark Walsh. "Then most impressively, he came back the next inning and was able to put us down three in a row. To me, that was the story of the game."

Bellovich led the way for William Paterson, finishing the game 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Lipari and Cutler were both 2-for-5. Matt St. John and Eric Zaleski were both 2-for-4 to lead Aurora.

William Paterson (30-12) advances in the winners' bracket where it will play the winner of tonight's Marietta/St. Thomas game. Aurora (38-7) will play the Marietta/St. Thomas loser at 3 p.m. tomorrow in an elimination game.
