Salem, Virginia - Craig Kerner and Scott Seabury combined to go 6-for-9 with 10 RBI to give Cortland State a 12-5 win over Brandeis in game five of the 1999 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship finals.
Seabury, a junior first baseman, was 4-for-5 with five RBI while Kerner, a sophomore left fielder, was 2-for-4 with three runs, five RBI, a double, and a triple.
Cortland's Rich Jarer allowed just one earned run while pitching the complete game.
Cortland opened the game with four consecutive hits, including a two-RBI standup triple by Kerner. He scored on a single by Seabury to put the Red Dragons up 3-0.
Brandeis tied the game in the bottom of the first with three unearned runs. Jim Freethy led off the inning with a single, and the Judges sandwiched a pair of base runners from a Cortland error and walk around a strikeout to load the bases with one out. Dave Cimini got one runner home with a sacrifice fly, and Matt Petherick hit a single to score another. With runners at the corners, Brandeis executed a double steal scoring Adam Zoldak while Petherick got caught in a rundown to end the inning.
The two teams traded runs in the third, as Seabury had a run-scoring single for Cortland State and Zoldak had a run-scoring single for Brandeis.
Cortland State opened a big lead up in the fourth with seven consecutive batters reaching base off Brandeis starter Cliff Smith and relief pitcher Bryan Haley. Kerner again had the big shot for Cortland State, clearing the bases with a three-RBI double. Pinch hitter Gregg Wormuth had a two-RBI single in Cortland's six-hit, four-run fourth.
Seabury put the Red Dragons up 12-4 in the seventh with a two-RBI single. Brandeis added one in the home half of the eighth as Cimini knocked in his second run of the game with a RBI single.
"We have two senior starters that have not picked up a ball yet," said Cortland coach Steve Owens. "One was an All-American last year (Mike Dempsey) and one was an All-American this year (Scott Brown). I was very pleased that we played Cortland baseball today."
Cortland State (36-9) will play the William Paterson/St. Thomas loser tomorrow at 3:30 p.m., while Brandeis ends its season with a 33-10 record.
