Salem, Virginia - Kris Buirley surrendered 12 hits but just one earned run to lead Marietta to a 5-2 win over Aurora in game six of the 1999 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship finals.
Buirley ran his season-record to 11-0 with the complete game. The sophomore stranded 11 Aurora runners on base and induced 17 ground-ball outs while striking out four.
"If you cannot chase the starter you cannot get into the weakness of most D-III ball teams, namely the bullpen," said Aurora coach Mark Walsh who was eliminated by two complete-game performances. "In these tournaments, in day two, you are still going to see a great starter."
After three and a half scoreless innings, Aurora opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning. Brian Buglio reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score on an RBI single by Derek Holland.
Trailing 1-0 after four innings, Marietta took the lead for good in the fifth, scoring two unearned runs thanks to two Aurora errors in the inning. Todd Yoder and Todd Timmer both had RBI singles for the Pioneers.
Marietta added to its lead in the seventh, scoring three to take a 5-1 lead. Dan Geudtner hit an RBI single and Chris Tekulve knocked in two more with a double in the inning.
Aurora scored a single run in the eighth as Jeremy Seyller doubled and scored on Holland's second RBI single of the game for the final 5-2 margin.
Aurora started the bottom of the ninth with a single, but grounded into its third double play of the game to end a threat. With the three double plays in today's game, Marietta has turned eight double plays in its two games in Salem.
Six different players combined for Marietta's seven hits, including a pair of doubles from Josh Streit. Holland was 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead Aurora, and Matt St. John and Seyller were 2-for-4.
Marietta (50-7) will play the Cal Lutheran/North Carolina Wesleyan loser tomorrow at noon, while Aurora ends its season with a 38-8 record.
