Salem, Virginia - St. Thomas University scored a combined seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings on its way to a 10-7 win over William Paterson in the eighth game of the 1999 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship finals.
Nathan Johnson got the win in relief for St. Thomas, pitching two and two-thirds innings. Starter Mike Honsa left with a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth, but did not pitch the required five innings for the win.
Five St. Thomas batters recorded two hits in the Tommies' 12-hit performance. Rich Swenson (Maple Grove, Minn.) was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI to lead the way.
St. Thomas raced out of the gates as lead off hitter Ryan Hartung (Apple Valley, Minn.) started the game with a solo home run.
William Paterson took the lead in the third as Corwin Belfield led off the inning with a single and scored on Mark DeMenna's triple. DeMenna scored on a Jack LiPari ground out to put William Paterson up 2-1.
The Tommies tied the game in the fourth on a Dan Novak solo home run.
William Paterson went back on top in the bottom of the third as Matt Rozema led off the inning with a double and scored on a single by Dan Torres.
Trailing 3-2, St. Thomas scored seven runs over the next two innings to take a 9-3 lead. Swenson had an RBI double in the Tommies' two-run fifth, and added a two-RBI double in a string of five consecutive hits in the sixth. St. Thomas scored five runs on six hits in the decisive sixth.
R.C. Renshaw helped William Paterson to two runs in the seventh to cut the St. Thomas lead to 9-5. Renshaw doubled in a run for his second hit of the game and came around to score.
St. Thomas added another insurance run in the top of the ninth as John Frein walked with the bases loaded for a 10-5 margin.
William Paterson added a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth for the final 10-7 margin. Rozema finished the game 4-for-4 with two singles, a double, and a triple to lead William Paterson.
St. Thomas (41-5) advances in the winners' bracket and will play the North Carolina Wesleyan (39-9) tomorrow at 7 p.m. William Paterson (30-13) drops to the losers' bracket and will play Cortland State (36-9) tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
