Salem, Virginia - Eric Kiszczak and David Gonzales combined for a five-hit shutout in an elimination game at the 1999 NCAA Division III Baseball Championships.
Kiszczak picked up the win, allowing just two hits over five innings to move to 6-0 on the year. He struck out six and allowed just two runners to reach second, both with two outs. Gonzales allowed just three hits in four innings of relief to earn his second save of the season.
Eight of Cal Lutheran's nine starters combined for 11 hits, including a 2-for-3, two RBI performance by Brian Malchow.
Cal Lutheran opened its scoring with a pair of runs in the opening inning as Brad Smith hit a two-RBI double. The Kingsmen added two more in the second to build a 4-0 lead. Jeremy Schlosser and Raudel Flores had back-to-back RBI singles.
"When you get on them early you have them on the ropes and you take them out of their game," said Cal Lutheran coach Marty Slimak. "Our pitchers approached the game well today and pitched as well as we needed them to. When you have your back against the wall, there is not a lot to tell the guys (before the game) except 'Losers go home.'"
Malchow extended the Cal Lutheran lead in the seventh with a two-out, two-RBI single, scoring Schlosser and Flores. Chris Tahan knocked a solo home run to left field for the final 7-0 margin.
"The game was decided in the batters' box because we just didn't hit the ball well today," said coach Don Schaly. "We simply did not do as good a job offensively as we are capable of. You can't take anything away from opponent's pitching when you get shut out like that."
Matt DeSalvo lasted just one and a third innings in a starting role for Marietta, surrendering six hits and four runs. The loss for DeSalvo was his first of the year and ends his freshman campaign with a 7-1 record. Mike Hall finished the game with seven and two-thirds innings in relief, allowing just one earned run and five hits.
Cal Lutheran (33-13) advances in the losers' bracket and will play St. Thomas tomorrow at either 3:30 p.m. or 7 p.m. Marietta ends its season with a 50-8 record.
