Salem, Virginia - William Paterson University scored three runs in the first inning in posting an 8-3 win over Cortland State University in an elimination game at the 1999 NCAA Division III Baseball Championships.
William Paterson got on the board in the first inning when R.C. Renshaw walked, stole second, advanced to third on Mike Bellovich's single, and scored on a Craig Cutler double to right-center. Bellovich also scored on the double. Jack Lipari walked and scored on a fielders choice by Matt Rozema.
Bellovich and Torres combined to go 6-for-9 with three base hits, a run, and an RBI each. Dan Snyder pitched a complete game, giving up 10 hits but allowed only three runs. Snyder struck out four and walked just one. Renshaw went 2-4 with a double, two runs, and an RBI for William Paterson, who out-hit Cortland State 12-10.
The Red Dragons scored two of their three runs in the sixth inning. Mike Burns and Mike LaPointe each singled to center to open the inning. After a sacrifice bunt moved LaPointe to second and pinch runner Tim Wright to third, Scott Seabury's two-out RBI-single scored LaPoints and Wright.
LaPointe went 3-5 to lead the Red Dragons. Seabury and teammate Larry Williams each had a pair of hits.
William Paterson Coach Jeff Albies commented on LaPointe's performance as a factor in the game. "Today LaPointe killed us, as he did earlier this year," said Albies. "He's a thorn in our side just like everyone else's but fortunately for us we didn't let Craig Kerner hurt us."
The Pioneers held Kerner, a first-team All-American, to an 0-4 day at the plate. Kerner was batting .360 coming into the game, second-best among Cortland State batters.
Cortland State Coach Steve Owens commented on Paterson's performance this afternoon. "The name of the game is to come out early, get some hits, score runs, and build a lead," said Owens. "When you get to the championship, you go through the war, but only one team can finish the season without a loss."
The Pioneers roughed Cortland State starter Scott Brown for eight hits in 3.2 innings on the mound for the Red Dragons.
William Paterson (31-13) advances to Monday's action and will play North Carolina Wesleyan College at either 3:30 p.m. or 7 p.m. Cortland State ends its season at 36-10.
