Salem, Virginia - North Carolina Wesleyan scored three runs in the fourth inning and got a strong pitching performance by freshman Jed Snead to post a 5-3 win over William Paterson and advance to the NCAA Championship game.
Snead allowed three runs and eight hits over seven and a third innings, fanning four in his first career start. He had pitched in just seven games and thrown nine innings prior to today, and runs his season record to 1-0.
"We decided during lunch today to start Snead," said NC Wesleyan coach Charlie Long. "He threw an outstanding game for someone who hadn't started all year."
Andy Jones led a 11-hit attack for NC Wesleyan with a 3-for-4 performance. Scott Robeson was 2-for-4 and Nick Buonocore was 2-for-3.
After three scoreless innings, NC Wesleyan had five consecutive batters reach base to take a 3-0 lead. Tim Wright delivered the big hit of the inning, scoring a pair with a two-RBI double. Wright scored on a single by Robeson for the 3-0 lead.
William Paterson answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth as Jack Lipari led off the inning with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Robert Riley.
Robeson gave NC Wesleyan a 4-1 lead in the sixth, leading off with a single and coming around to score on a throwing error by Kalafut.
William Paterson got its first two batters on base in the sixth inning, and had men on second and third with just one out. After a ground out to third, NC Wesleyan shortstop Barry Blake made a diving catch in shallow centerfield to end the threat.
"I didn't ever think he would get to it," said William Paterson coach Jeff Albies. "We had the momentum at that point but Blake stole it from us. He made my all-star team today."
Robeson again scored for NC Wesleyan in the top of the eighth, reaching base with a walk and scoring on a suicide squeeze executed perfectly by Jeremy Stewart.
Trailing 5-1, William Paterson scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Mike Bellovich led off the inning with a double, and scored on a single by Craig Cutler. After Snead gave way to Russ Fink on the mound for NC Wesleyan, Cutler scored on a RBI double by pinch hitter Nick Franklin to draw William Paterson within two at 5-3.
The Pioneers stranded two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth, and finished the game leaving six runners in scoring position.
North Carolina Wesleyan (41-9) advances to the finals tomorrow and will play St. Thomas (42-6) at 3:30 p.m. If St. Thomas wins, the same two teams will play again at 7:00 p.m. for the title. The Battling Bishops, 4-0 during the tournament in Salem, need just one win in two games to claim their first NCAA title since 1989. William Paterson ends its season 31-14.
