Marietta Moves On To Salem Kris Buirley was named tournament MVP after going 2-0 with a 1.06 ERA in 17 innings for Marietta
Canton, OH - After winning a Division III-best 45 games during the regular season, Marietta continued its magic in 1999 by capturing the NCAA Division III Mideast Region Baseball Tournament. The Pioneers (49-6), who are going to the National Championship Tournament for the first time since 1996, defeated Ohio Wesleyan 8-4 on Monday (May 24) to win the title. The top of the first inning set the tone for the game. Bishop starter Curt Moenter hit Mike Deegan with an 0-2 pitch to open the game, and that started a strange inning. After a fielder's choice left Todd Timmer at first base with one out, catcher Jason Bogenrife threw the ball away while trying to pick off Timmer at first. Dan Geudtner followed with a single to right to move Timmer to third. Geudtner stole second to make it runners on second and third with one out. Moenter then enduced a ground ball back to him by Chris Tekulve, catching Timmer between third and home. Moenter threw the ball away, however, allowing Timmer and Geudtner to score. The Bishops appeared poised to take control of the game in the bottom of the fourth, when Ohio Wesleyan scored a run with a single, two walks and a hit batter and had the bases loaded with no one out. The Pioneers took out starter Matt DeSalvo and brought in Mike Hall. Hall struck out Drew Caravella and Corey Lake and got Paul Lashuk to fly out to left. That set the stage for the top of the fifth, when Marietta scored six runs, including five with two outs, on seven hits. Tyson Hill and Todd Yoder each had two RBI hits in an inning that saw 11 batter come to the plate. Picking up the win in relief is Hall, who tossed five strong innings. He allowed only eight hits and three earned runs while striking out four. Two of the three runs he gave up came in the ninth, when the Bishops did load the bases with no one out, but only plated four runs.. |
