Mideast Regional - Game 1 - May 20, 1999
The 1999 NCAA Division III Mideast Region Sectional Tournament at Canton's Thurman Munson Stadium opened as expected, as top-seeded Marietta squeaked out a 3-2 win over No. 6 seed Rochester in a first-round game Thursday (May 20).
The Pioneers (46-5), who upped their winning streak to an incredible 40 straight games, jumped on top 2-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. A hit batter, a single and a walk loaded the bases with one out. Dan Geudtner singled to right, extending his hitting streak to 31 games and scoring Todd Yoder with the game's first run. Chris Tekulve followed with a sacrifice fly to to center field to plate Mike Deegan.
Rochester (26-13) rallied to tie the score with two runs in the top of the fifth. Brian Hollihan led off the inning with a single. After a strike out, David Capucilli double to left. The Pioneers left fielder Adam Hollrah bobbled the ball, allowing Hollihan to score. With two outs, Capucilli was at third and Jim Lilly was at first. Lilly took off for second, and when Pioneer catcher Josh Streit threw the ball to second, Capucilli took off for home. Marietta threw home and had Lilly out, but the ball tipped off the glove of Streit, allowing Capucilli to score.
The winning run scored in the bottom of the sixth, as Tyson Hill, who led off the inning by being hit by a pitch, scored on a single by Mike Deegan.
On the mound, Kris Buirley was dominant, striking out 10 while improving his record to 9-0. He allowed only seven hits and one earned run. The Pioneers' ace, Dave Bradley, came on in the ninth to get the final two outs for his first save of the year. Chris LaRocco was the tough-luck loser for Rochester, allowing only three runs in eight innings.
