Mideast Regional - Game 3 - May 20, 1999
Big innings were the trademark of Wooster's 1998 squad that finished the season 40-6, but the Scots have rarely broken loose in 1999 with large scoring outbursts, especially against strong competition. Thursday night (May 20) was a flashback to a year ago, however, as Wooster scored seven times in the top of the sixth inning on its way to a 9-3 victory over Anderson in the first round of the Division III Mideast Regional.
Leading 2-1 going into the sixth, the Scots got their leadoff hitter on base when Chris Mihin reached on an error by the shortstop. Ben Byo the hit a double to deep center field that moved Mihin to third. Mike Morris walked to load the bases. Sean Malone was also walked, forcing in a run. Jeff Nowoczynski was hit by the very next pitch to plate Byo with the second run of the inning. Upped stepped Trevor Urban, the NCAC Player of the Year. Riding an 0-for-13 slump, he hit a triple to center field that scored three runs. Wooster scored two more runs in the inning on a single by Jared Treadway and a double by Chris Mihin.
Anderson (34-13) made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh, as it scored twice on a double by Brian Stayte and a fielder's choice by Chad Pike. Matt Englander came on with one out and left the bases loaded with Ravens.
Picking up the win for Wooster was Mike Morris, who improved his record to 7-1 after allowing three runs in 6.1 innings. Matt Englander came on to get the final eight hits without allowing a run.
Wooster (35-12) will now face Ohio Wesleyan Friday night (May 21) at 7 p.m. Anderson will face Marietta at 3:30 p.m.
