Anderson Rallies To Defeat Pioneers

Anderson wins 8-7 in 11-innings

For the second-straight season, Anderson dropped its opening game in the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional, this time 9-3 to Wooster on Thursday (May 20). But once again, the Ravens staved off elimination with an improbable win over the No. 1 seed. This year Marietta was the victim, as Anderson rallied for an 8-7 win in 11 innings Friday (May 21) in Game 6 to keep its hopes of repeating as regional champs alive.

Anderson's string of exciting wins in the regional appeared to be over on Friday, as it trailed 5-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning. But the Ravens exploded for four runs on five hits to take a 6-5 lead. All five of Anderson's hits were singles and three of the four runs came with two outs. Tim Bontrager singled to right to tie the game, then Chad Pike delivered a single to center for the go-ahead run.

In the top of the ninth, the Pioneers had Todd Timmer on first base with two outs when Anderson brought in left-handed reliever Derek Byard to retire the left-handed hitting Chris Tekulve. The strategy did not work, however, as Tekulve ripped a double to right center to score Timmer. Josh Streit then hit a ball that was bobbled by Bontrager at third allowing Streit to reach first. In his attempt to throw out Streit, Bontrager threw it wild past first, allowing Tekulve to score all the way from second.

Marietta brought on their ace Dave Bradley to save the game in the ninth, but Anderson scratched out a run when Brian Stayte reached on a infield single to shortstop scoring Jonathan Carey.

Both teams were held scoreless in the 10th, but an error by Pioneer third baseman Mike Menke - Marietta's only error of the game - allowed Matt Bair to reach first to start the inning. Bair eventually made it to third base with two outs. That's when DJ Smith dumped a soft single to center to score the winning run.

Picking up the win in relief was Byard, who improved his record to 4-3. Shane Freshour took the loss, dropping to 3-2.
