Mideast Regional - Game 7 - May 22, 1999
Defense. It is the most overlooked aspect of baseball but it is probably just as important as any aspect of the game, especially during postseason play. Wooster learned that the hard way on Saturday, as crucial errors and other miscues proved costly in a 10-6 loss to Marietta that knocked the Scots out of the Mideast Regional.
Wooster (35-14) never led during the game, but twice bounced back from three-run deficits. The first two innings were scoreless before a rain-delay of 2:18 halted the game. When action resumed, Marietta scored once in the third and twice in the fourth to lead 3-0. The Scots got one run back in the fourth and tied the game with two runs in the fifth.
In the top of the sixth, the Pioneers has runners on second and third with two outs when Todd Timmer hit a grounder to shortstop Trevor Urban. Urban's throw to first was in the dirt and could not be handled, allowing a run to score. Two batters later with the bases loaded, Tim Pellman came on in relief. He threw two consecutive wild pitches that scored two runs.
Wooster scored twice in the seventh to cut the lead to 6-5. Sean Malone led off the inning with a double then scored on a single by Travis Snyder. Later in the inning, Trevor Urban scored on a wild pitch. In the eighth inning, Jared Treadway walked with two outs then stole second base. Sean Malone followed with a single down the third base line that tied the score.
In the top of the ninth, Josh Streit led off with a single. Dusty Childress laid down a bunt that was fielded by Matt Englander. He fired to second, but the ball deflected off of Urban's glove and everyone was safe. Tyson Hill also tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt, but Streit was thrown out at third. Englander struck out Adam Hollrah for the second out, but a line drive by Todd Yoder to center could not be handled by a sliding Treadway, which allowed a run to score. A two-run single by Timmer and a double steal plated three more runs and clinched the win for Marietta.
Going the distance for the Pioneers (47-6) was Dave Bradley, who set a Division III record by winning his 18th game of the season. He did allow 10 hits and six earned runs, but struck out 11. For Wooster, six different pitchers saw action, including four freshman. John Werner got the start allowing three earned runs in 3.1 innings. It was the only earned runs Wooster allowed. Taking the loss in relief was Englander, who allowed the four unearned runs in the ninth. As a team, the Scots walked 10 batters and had four wild pitches.
Another interesting note is that not one Wooster player made an out on the ground in 40 plate appearances. Marietta will now face Ohio Wesleyan in Game 9, while Wooster's season is over. Urban went 2-for-3 to finish the season right at .400.
