Grand Chute, Wisconsin - Andy Coble scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning, coming across after a failed pickoff attempt, to lead Marietta College to a 3-2 victory over the University of Southern Maine in a NCAA Division III Baseball Championships elimination game Sunday afternoon at Fox Cities Stadium. With the win, Marietta (46-8-1) will face the University of St. Thomas on Monday at a time to be determined after St. Thomas' game with Montclair State University later Sunday. Southern Maine finishes its season at 37-14.
Coble, who was moved to the No. 8 spot in the order after spending most of the championships as the team's No. 2 hitter, went 3-for-4 in Sunday's contest. With one out in the eighth, Coble hit a double to right center and advanced to third on a single by Dusty Childress. Southern Maine brought in a relief pitcher, Ryan Adams. On a pickoff attempt, Adams' throw skipped wide of first, allowing Coble to score the eventual game-winning run. "I think I was put down there because I wasn't performing as well as I should be," Coble said. "I figured I was put down there so I could see a couple more fastballs, to see something a little bit better to hit. Luckily I got fastballs where I could hit them, and I got the hits."
Trey Lamb pitched a complete-game effort to notch the victory for the Pioneers, the third complete game pitched by Marietta during the championship series. He struck out nine Huskies while allowing only two walks and seven hits. "He threw harder in the ninth than he did in the seventh," said Marietta coach Don Schaly. "His velocity actually increased. He really threw with a lot of heart and a lot of guts."
Lamb squelched a key USM threat in the fourth inning, when the Huskies loaded the bases on a single, double and walk with nobody out. Lamb was able to score two strikeouts and a groundout to stop the Husky rally. "Early on, my off-speed stuff was working real well, and that's what I got out of that jam in with the bases loaded," Lamb said. "I knew I had to get the strikeouts so I was throwing a lot of sliders. I was keeping them low, hoping to keep it on the ground or get the strikeout, and I got it." "Bases loaded, no outs, that early in the game, you get up there and hit and try to break the game open," said Southern Maine coach Ed Flaherty. "We didn't put the ball into play, and you have to put the ball in play in that spot. But you have to give the kid (Lamb) credit. He was getting his breaking ball over for strikes in big counts, and in major counts, he was getting his curveball over. … We just failed to capitalize on it and they took advantage of it."
In the bottom of the fourth, the Pioneers plated two runs to take the lead, as No. 7-hitter Derek Pauley stroked a two-run double to left-center with one out. Pauley ended up 2-for-4 at the plate, as was leadoff hitter Dusty Childress and No. 5-hitter Mike Deegan. "There was no way we were going to lose today," Pauley said. "That was the attitude."
The Huskies tied the game at 2-2 in the seventh inning, as Jason Dority drove in a run on a groundout and Peter L'Italien plated a run on a double to right field. However, after the run-scoring double, Southern Maine was able to put just two runners on base the rest of the way, with one threat ending on a double play in the eighth. Southern Maine ended up using four pitchers in the contest, as starter Todd Southwick lasted just three-and-a-third innings, giving up eight hits.
