Marietta returns to the NCAA Baseball Championships with 13-2 victory

Marietta, Ohio - For the second time in three years, Marietta College's baseball team will play in the NCAA Division III Baseball Championships. The Etta Express advanced with an 13-2 victory over Allegheny in Sunday's Mideast Regional championship at Pioneer Park.

Sophomore right-hander Trey Lamb was the big story for the Pioneers (44-7-1). Lamb threw eight innings of shutout ball against a potent Gator lineup. Lamb had five strikeouts and scattered nine hits. His season ERA dropped to 0.86.

The Pioneers added five runs in the ninth to put the game out of reach. Both Kevin May and Todd Yoder came off the bench with RBI singles in the inning. Allegheny scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth on Brian Zorman's and Alan Clouse's solo home runs off of reliever Jim Sharp.

Marietta College junior catcher Jay Coakley belted two home runs to pace the Etta Express offense Sunday. Coakley belted a seventh-inning grand slam to give Marietta an 8-0 lead over Allegheny entering the eighth inning of play at Pioneer Park. Coakley's heroics were set up by Todd Timmer walking, Mike Menke reaching on a fielder's choice and Derek Pauley's single to load the bases. He added a three-run shot in the ninth. Timmer scored on Andy Coble's walk and Menke scored when Dusty Childress walked. Pauley scored when Matt McLuckey ripped a single up the middle and then Coakley's 425-foot blast cleared the scoreboard for the Pioneers' lead.

Pauley's single through the left side of the infield driving in Menke in the fifth inning gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Menke doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch.

The Gators loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, but Bob Spithaler popped up to second baseman Todd Timmer. In the bottom of the sixth, two Allegheny batters reached base, but Brian Moore grounded out to end the threat.

In the fourth inning, Marietta's Mike Deegan banged out his second hit, but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double.

In the third inning, Allegheny pitcher Keith Gonzales set down the Pioneers 1-2-3 hitters with little trouble. In the bottom half, Gators' Ben Couch singled, but was thrown out stealing. In the second inning, Deegan singled, but the Pioneers couldn't muster anymore offense.

The Gators had two batters reach - Kevin Hiles and Tug Ollock - but Joe Kacsanek struck out and Brian Moore grounded out to third baseman Dusty Childress.

In the top of the first inning, Marietta College loaded the bases with one out, but sophomore DH Brent Curtin hit into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
