The College of New Jersey wins 15-5

Nine doubles sets new Championship record

Grand Chute, Wisconsin - Big innings are the difference in baseball games. When a team has a big inning, it wins, when it allows a big inning it loses. Such was the case for The College of New Jersey Saturday night, as it came back to defeat Carthage (Wis.) College, 15-5, in a NCAA Division III Championship losers’ bracket contest at Fox Cities Stadium. Carthage was looking to avenge a tough loss on Friday in which they gave up all 12 runs of a 12-4 contest with Christopher Newport University in one inning.

The Redmen came out strong, putting three runs on the board in the bottom of the first. But the Lions retaliated with three of their own in the top of the second when first baseman Colin Renick singled into right field. Renick moved to second when shortstop Mike Kohri singled to the opposite field. Carthage starter Dan Lorum got designated hitter Greg Martinez to swing at strike three but proceeded to give up a double to right fielder Brian Hickey (pictured on the right), scoring Renick and Kohri. Hickey scored on Sergio Sencion’s single to right-center, before leadoff man Brian Flynn struck out swinging to end the inning.

Carthage squandered a chance to pull ahead in their half of the frame, taking a 4-3 lead before Dennis Jackson flew out to centerfield with the bases loaded to end the inning. The Lions put three more on the board in the third to take a 6-4 lead, and blew the game open in the fifth with another three to chase Lorum from the game. The right-hander from Milwaukee left the game having allowed nine runs — all earned — on 11 hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

"They just hit everything we threw at them," Carthage coach Augie Schmidt said. "They’re a fastball-hitting team and we throw a lot of fastballs. I don’t have any guys who just throw junk. "It’s not a good match up." Reliever Jason Wiertel fared no better, allowing six runs on eight hits in 1.2 innings of work as TCNJ extended the lead to 15-4.

Lions first baseman continued his torrid hitting with a three-for-six outing, including a run and two batted in. For the tournament, he is batting six-for-seven with three RBI. Renick and leftfielder Bob Capaldo (pictured on the left) each added three hits and a pair of runs in five at-bats, and combined for four RBI. In all, eight players recorded two or more hits for The College of New Jersey, which will take a 35-13 record into a Sunday match up with either Lakeland or Concordia-Austin.

The Lions also got a solid effort on the mound from Bryan Shaffer who went 8.2 innings, giving up just two earned runs on 12 hits with nine strikeouts.

Jason Lensmeyer and Patrick Brown, who each had two hits and a run, led Carthage, which finished with a 34-11 mark on the year.

NOTES: The game, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. (CDT), got underway at 5:30 p.m., due to rain that washed a pair of games from the slate … TCNJ entered the game with a .976 fielding percentage, highest of the eight series participants … Both teams entered the game with perfect records stealing bases. Carthage leads the tournament with seven, while TCNJ has swiped five … TCNJ’s five doubles were just two shy of the Championship series record.
