Carthage wins Central Regional, 4-0
MONMOUTH, Ill. - Carthage broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Adam Husing and that run was enough to give the Carthage Redmen a berth in next weeks National Championship in Grand Chute, Wisconsin. Carthage College improves to 34-9 and Monmouth ends their season 26-13. The Redmens Jason Wiertel tossed a brilliant four-hit shutout to slam the door on the Scots bid to force the if necessary title game on Monday. Wiertel, who was an All-American for Carthage during the basketball season, walked two and struck out five in his gem. Monmouth put only three runners in scoring position and only one runner reached third. On that occasion, which came with two outs, Wiertel induced an inning-ending grounder to third. The Scots, meanwhile, dodged numerous Carthage scoring attempts through seven innings, with Adam Husings leadoff homer in the bottom of the fourth producing the games only run to that point. But in the eighth, two hit batsmen opened the door again and, on back-to-back pitches, Mike Giddings singled in one run and Dave Fellin doubled home two more. 2002 Central Regional All-Tournament Team MVP - Brandon Roth, Carthage Pitcher - Brandon Roth, Carthage; Jason Wiertel, Carthage; Brandon Roth, Carthage; Catcher - Taylor Thiel, Monmouth; First Base - Luke Martin, Carthage; Second Base - Adam Husing, Carthage; Third Base - Justin Hallock, Carthage; Shortstop - Dave Fellin, Carthage; Outfield - Jack Dime, Aurora; Kyle Mallon, Carthage; Dennis Jackson, Carthage; Designated Hitter - Joe Larkins, Monmouth. |
