Georgetown, Texas - The Trinity baseball team opened its first-ever NCAA regional tournament appearance with a 7-1 win over fellow SCAC school - and host of the tournament - Southwestern University on Thursday night at Rockwell Field. Trinity (36-9) set a new school record for wins in a single season, and beat the Pirates for the fifth time in seven meetings this year. Trinity is ranked 23rd in the nation, but was seeded second in the regional, while Southwestern is 15th in D-III and third in the regional seeding.
The Tigers struck early, pounding out three runs in the first inning courtesy of an RBI infield single, and a two-run triple. In the third, a two-run homer made the score 5-0, but Southwestern broke up the shutout with an unearned run in the fifth.
That would be all they could muster though, as Trinity pitchers allowed just six hits. Mike Kelly started the game, going four innings and allowing no runs on three hits. Joe Brown (5-1) took the win, pitching four innings and allowing one run on two hits (unearned). Theo Risinger finished off the game, striking out two in the ninth to close things out.
Cory Cassell led the Tigers with a 2-4 performance at the plate, scoring twice and driving in two on his sixth homer of the season. Jason Armstrong also had two hits and two RBI, as did Chris Ashmos. Jeff Wright led all players with four hits, also scoring one run. Trinity will face Concordia tomorrow morning, with the winner advancing to the Regional Championship on Saturday afternoon.
