GRAND CHUTE, Wisconsin - DeSales University head coach offered no excuses for his team’s 7-0 loss to Emory University in a 2003 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship Series losers’ bracket game at Fox Cities Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs connected off Emory starter Reed Harvey for 11 of their 12 hits, and drew a walk as well, but finished the day – and their first trip to the championship – with 14 runners left on base.
“We left a small nation out there today,” DeSales head coach Tim Neiman said. “I kept thinking the boat would hit the dock eventually, and we’d get a few runs in.” DeSales left a runner on base in every inning of the contest and stranded runners in scoring position eight times.
Credit a lot of that to the efficient pitching of Harvey (pictured to the left) . The senior righty used a collection of off-speed throws mixed in with an effective fastball to work out of multiple jams. Emory’s offense also made the most of its opportunities.
The Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the third when Justin Gordon stole home. They added four more in the bottom of the fourth inning. Andrew Pickney led off the frame with a double to right center, one of his record tying three in the game. Catcher Adam Schorr followed with a double of his own to the opposite field to drive in Pickney. Schorr stole third and scored on shortstop Rob Segear’s single to left field to make the score 3-0. Segear was picked off at first to give DeSales starter Chris Ross his first out of the inning. But an error on third baseman Dan Fratantoro allowed Bryan Langbord to reach and advance to second. Josh Barrett flew out to right for the second out. Aaron Rosdal laid a bunt down the third base line to put two on with two out. Another error by Fratantoro allowed both Rosdahl and Langbord to score before Michael Sayegh flew out to end the inning.
The Eagles added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh and rode the relief pitching of Steve Zaycjhik and John Illius through the eighth and ninth to improve to 37-14 and move on to another elimination game Sunday against either the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh or Trinity College.
After being eliminated from its first championship appearance, DeSales finished with a 30-14 mark.
