Grand Chute, Wisconsin - CNU’s baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and held off a late Chapman, the nation’s leader in team ERA, rally to advance 6-4 in the Division III College World Series.
After Jeremy Elliott grounded out, Ricky Medina singled and Matt Turner flied out for the second out of the inning. Chris Phaup was then hit by a pitch, advancing Medina to second base. Scotty George followed with a RBI single scoring Medina. Phaup advanced to third on a throwing error. John Corbin followed that with a RBI single to score Phaup. Jayson Basanes (left) then doubled to score George and Jason Moody followed that with a RBI single to score Corbin and Basanes moved up to third base. Matt Lewellen(right) then singled home Basanes for the fifth run of the inning.
Chapman then scored twice in the second and the Captains added an unearned run in the third. Chapman then scored twice in the eighth and threatened several more times in the eighth until Jason Brown retired Matt Graves on a fly out to end the inning. Brown then retired the side in order in the ninth to pick up his sixth save of the season.
Chapman pitchers are holding their opponents to just a .196 batting average coming into the tournament. Tonight, CNU had 13 hits in 37 at bats for a batting average of .351.
Cary Bruner started and went seven plus innings allowing four runs on 10 hits while walking four and striking out six picking up his seventh win of the season.
Medina, George, Corbin, Basanes and Lewellen each had two hits to lead the offensive attack for CNU. The Captains are now 33-7 and will play Anderson (IN) Sunday at 8 pm eastern time.
