Third-seeded Trinity (Conn) Bantams advance to Division III Championship Tournament

Troy, NY -- Trinity (Conn.) College exploded for six runs in the sixth inning to down top-seeded Cortland State, 10-2, in the final game of the six-team, double elimination NCAA Division III Baseball Regional at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy, N.Y. With the victory, the Trinity Bantams advance to next week’s Division III National Championship Tournament in Wisconsin.

The Bantams got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Bantams loaded the bases and senior Rob Dolliver singled up the middle to score Rob O’Leary and Jeff Natale. O’Leary and Natale each singled to get on and were moved over to third and second respectively by Jayme Dorr’s grounder.

The Red Dragons got one back in the fifth inning as Brian Huber doubled to right field with two outs and was brought home by a Matt Ellis single to left field.

Kurt Piantek got the run back for the Bantams to start the sixth inning with a 425 foot home run to left centerfield. The home run was the fourth of the tournament for Piantek, who was also named the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. The Bantams tacked on two more runs in the inning after they loaded the bases. O’Leary singled through the right side, scoring Andrew Fries and Andrew Goldstein, and brought an end to Cortland starter Mike Hubbs’ day. Ryan Ensel relieved Hubbs and gave up a three-run home run to Angel Resto, an opposite field homer to right field. The home run scored O’Leary and Bill Wise and gave the Bantams an 8-1 lead. After Ensel was relieved by Nick McPartland, who got the last out of the sixth.

Ellis homered for the Red Dragons in the seventh, but the Bantams matched that as O’Leary drove in Fries in the bottom half of the seventh.

The Bantams added another run in the eighth as Fries singled in Jeff Natale.

For Cortland, Hubbs suffered his first loss of the season and allowed seven earned runs. In the tournament Hubbs allowed eight earned runs, doubling his four entering the tournament.

Trinity’s Matthew Krantz earned his first win of the tournament allowing just two runs and six hits over eight innings of work. Craig Tredenick came on to work the final inning for the Bantams.

Trinity, the first non-New York team since 1990 to win this regional, will advance to its first Division III Championship Tournament and will face Christopher Newport in Grand Chute, Wisc.
