Bulldogs Advance to Regional Championship, Eliminate Hopkins, 8-4

Boyertown, PA -- The DeSales University baseball team advanced to the 2003 NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship game with an 8-4 win over the #2 seed Johns Hopkins University who is eliminated from the tournament.

The Bulldogs, who have now defeated Johns Hopkins four consecutive times all in NCAA Regional play, had to come from behind for the first time in the tournament as they trailed 2-1 entering the sixth inning. DSU rallied in the bottom of the sixth with two runs to take a 3-2 lead on an RBI groundout from senior Kevin Coyle and a two-out RBI single from junior Mike Cohan.

DeSales broke the game open in the seventh scoring four times to take a 7-2 lead as the DSU pitching did the rest. The Bulldogs tallied its four runs on two Hopkins fielding errors and on doubles from sophomores Ian Hauze and Kyle Hoffman.

Junior Tim Gombar earned the win as he improve to 6-0 this season going 7.1 strong innings allowing just eight hits and four runs. Junior Jeff Hurley earned his third save of the season going 1.2 innings retiring all five batters he faced.

Hauze, Hoffman, sophomore Dan Fratantoro, and senior Brett Vargo each had two hits to lead the offensive attack. Fratantoro and Hauze each scored twice in the win.
