Delaware, OH -- Troy Loyd slammed a pair of 3-run homers, including one that broke a 6-6 tie and put the Ravens ahead to stay, as Anderson defeated Benedictine to advance to the championship game of the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional on Saturday at Littick Field on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.
The Ravens advance to play Ohio Wesleyan in the regional championship game at 3 p.m. on Saturday. An Ohio Wesleyan win would give the Battling Bishops the regional title and a berth in the NCAA Division III championship tournament. An Anderson win would force a winner-take-all Game 7 at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Anderson took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning when Brent Hodges led off with a double down the leftfield line. One out later, Troy Loyd singled to left, sending Hodges to third before Travis Davis and Adam Bollier walked to force in Hodges. Benedictine starter Pat Murphy came back to get Brandon Dillon to bounce into a force play at the plate and retire Duke Behr on a fly out to get out the inning without any further damage.
The Eagles took the lead with 2 runs in the bottom of the first as Anderson starter Clint Williams walked the first 3 Benedictine batters but got Steven Weidner and Jared Shamblin to bounce into run-scoring fielders' choices before Aaron Altenburg bounced out to end the inning.
Anderson took the lead in the top of the second when Kyle Rayl led off with a single and Aaron Woolsey followed with a single down the leftfield line, sending Rayl to third. Hodges then forced Woolsey at second, with Rayl scoring on the play, and John Buckner followed with a single before Loyd belted a homer to right center to give the Ravens a 5-2 lead.
The Ravens added a run in the third when Eagle third baseman Altenburg made a throwing error on Woolsey's bunt, with Behr scoring from first on the play.
Benedictine came back with 3 runs in the bottom of the third, with Tom Baumgartner lining an RBI single and Scott Weber adding a 2-run single later in the inning, and the Eagles tied the game at 6-6 in the fifth on Baumgartner's double down the rightfield line.
Anderson took the lead in the sixth. Woolsey led off with a double down the leftfield line and, one out later, Buckner was hit by a pitch. Loyd followed with a homer down the leftfield line to give the Ravens a 9-6 lead.
The Ravens added a run in the seventh on Woolsey's fielder's choice grounder and had Dillon's 2-run single highlight a 3-run eighth that put the game away.
Ben Munce, who came on in relief of Williams, shut out the Eagles on 3 hits over the final 4.2 innings and was credited with the win. He struck out 7 and walked 4.
Murphy was charged with the loss for Benedictine.
Loyd finished the game with 3 hits and 6 RBI, while Dillon and Woolsey also contributed 3 hits apiece to Anderson's 15-hit uprising.
Baumgartner went 4-for-5 to highlight the Benedictine offense
