Willimanti, CN -- Second seed Wheaton College is ranked 22nd nationally and showed it with a solid victory of fifth seed Albertus Magnus.
Leading 4-2, Wheaton broke the game open by scoring seven runs on four hits and one error in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Scott Beattie hit a three-run home run off starting pitcher Vin Caruso, a senior lefty, to drive in the first three runs of the inning after junior Tim Ziakas (walk) and sophomore Rob Cipolla (single) had reached to open the inning.
All-New England senior righty Mike Hunsinger, who has won eight of his team’s 26 games, pitched his fourth complete game in ten starts for Wheaton. After allowing single runs in the third and fourth, he shut out the Falcons on six hits over the final five innings. He fanned nine without a walk in the game.
