Willimanti, CN -- After making seven errors in an 11-2 loss to No. 2 Wheaton Thursday, Albertus Magnus made only one error Friday to earn their first win in the NCAA tournament with a 5-1 victory over Endicott College. After both team lost their first round games yesterday, Endicott losing to host ECSU 3-8 and Albertus losing to Wheaton College 2-11, it was a win or go home situation for both teams.
Sophomore righty Albert Battista lowered his ERA to 2.31 by pitching his fifth complete game in seven starts to gain the win. Battista did not allow a run after the first inning, when he gave up two of his five hits. He struck out the first two batters he faced before senior Steve Tierinni doubled and later scored on a single by junior Mike Lucas.
Endicott commited three errors in the game which led to two unearned runs. The game-tying run in the top of the third was unearned and scored directly as a result of an error. Sophomores Joe Tomasi and Jesse Seto each singled after there was one out in the inning.
In the first inning with two out no one on, Endicott 's took the early lead with back to back hits scoring the first run of the game. Senior Steve Tierinni doubled and scored on a single from senior Mike Lucas. After that, the Gulls would only have runners in scoring position (second base) only twice with two out in the second and one out in the fifth.
Junior Vin Rispoli s sacrifice fly in the fourth put Albertus ahead for good. Senior Vin Caruso had walked to open the inning and went to third on a single by Imperio before scoring on Rispoli s fly ball to center.
Albertus put the game away with three runs in the ninth on three hits, a walk and an infield throwing error. Rispoli singled and scored in the inning and No. 9 hitter junior Mark Sampieri had an RBI double and scored.
