Eastern Conn State, ranked first in Division III, defeated Brandeis for the eighth straight time in post-season play in posting its largest margin of victory in a shutout in 25 years of NCAA post-season play. Junior righty Joey Serfass has set an NCAA Division III record for consecutive scoreless innings (41.3): 2.3 innings April 15 against Trinity, seven innings April 19 against Rhode Island College, eight innings April 25 against Keene State and nine innings against Southern Maine May 3 and May 9 and six innings in this game. The previous record of 37 innings was held by Jeff Hootselle of Mary Washington College.
Eastern Conn scored all the runs they would need in the second inning when Dwight Wildman led off with a double, advanced to third on a fly out to right and scored on Marc Garofalo's ground out to shortstop.
Leading 1-0 after two innings, Eastern scored five runs on four hits and four errors in the third and added four runs on five hits in the fourth and four runs on four hits in the fifth. Junior centerfielder Dwight Wildman, who tied an Eastern record with three doubles in the game, had two doubles and a single, drove in three runs and scored three in those three big innings. Junior leftfielder Eugene Julien had an RBI single and scored in the third, an RBI double and scored in the fourth and a two-run double and scored in the fifth. The top four spots in the order accounted for nine hits, 11 runs and seven RBI.
Eastern chased Brandeis senior starter Mike Parissi in the fourth inning with four more runs on five hits and an error, rapping two doubles in the fourth.
Brandeis got base runners on in every inning, but only two advanced past second base. Senior catcher Sean Ewers (Old Lyme, Conn.) led the way, going 3-4 with a double, but he was the only Brandeis hitter with more than one hit.
Eastern has matched last year’s final win total when it won its fourth national championship and needs one win for its third 40-win season.
Brandeis, which brought a seven-game winning streak into the tournament, commited 11 errors in two games. The Judges were coming off a 3-2, 13 inning loss to Bridgewater State Thursday night in their tournament opener.
