Willimanti, CN -- No. 2 seeded Wheaton built a 5-0 lead after its first four at-bats and went on to post its 16th win in its last 18 outings in moving into the winners' bracket final. The Lyons, ranked second in New England, will face top-seeded and No. 1 nationally-ranked Eastern Connecticut Saturday at noon, with the winner advancing to the championship round Sunday at noon needing one win for the title. Wheaton beat Eastern 7-4 in last year's winners' bracket final but Eastern bounced back to win twice on the final day on the way to the regional and national championships.
Sophomore righty Jon Jackson pitched his first complete game of the season in his seventh start, limiting the Bears to five singles and a double. Jackson gave up three hits when the Bears scored their two runs in the fourth, senior Chris Dargon singling in both runs. Wheaton has gotten complete games from both of its starters in the tournament. The win was the third this year for Wheaton over Bridgewater, the first two coming by one run each.
The top six hitters in the Wheaton lineup each drove in a run. Sophomore Keith Cooper made it 1-0 with an RBI single in the first; freshman Rafael Castillo made it 2-0 with an RBI ground out in the second, junior John Ablondi made it 3-0 with an RBI double in the third and junior Tim Ziakas and sophomore Rob Cipolla gave the Lyons a 5-0 lead in the fourth with an RBI single and ground ball, respectively. Ziakas was responsible for three runs in the game with the RBI and two runs scored.
For Bridgewater, junior lefty Nate Horsman struck out nine in 5 and 2/3 innings in relief. He allowed only four hits and Wheaton's final run and didn't walk a batter. Sophomore righty Josh White lost for only the second time against six wins. White entered the game with a 2.49 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 50.2 innings but was roughed up for eight hits and five earned runs before giving way to Horsman with one out in the fourth.
Fourth-seeded Bridgewater, coming off a late 3-2, 13-inning win over third-seeded Brandeis University Thursday night, faces Albertus Magnus in an elimination game at 3:30 p.m., and must come right back to face the Wheaton-Eastern loser at 7 p.m.
