Willimanti, CN -- Senior right Adam Czerwinski pitched his third complete game in his last four starts, winning his 21st career game (against 11 losses) and avenging a loss last year in this winners’ bracket final against Wheaton. It marked the sixth straight start in which he has pitched at least eight innings. It was his third complete game of the year and fifth in 43 career starts.
All of Eastern’s runs in the game came after there were two out. Sophomore Leon Galemba drove in the team’s first three runs with singles. He gave Eastern a 2-0 lead in the first and a 3-0 lead in the fifth.
After Wheaton cut the gap to 3-2 Eastern scored single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth. Sophomore Tom Koch drove in two runs with RBI singles in the sixth and eighth.
Junior Dwight Wildman, batting .500 (16-for-32) in Little East Conference and NCAA post-season tournament play, had two his and scored two runs. Senior Dan Silva was 3-for-4, scored two runs and made a diving catch with Eastern leading 4-2 to end the seventh inning with a runner on second base.
With Eastern leading 3-0, Czerwinski allowed two runs on three hits in the top of the sixth inning but a strikeout-caught stealing double play ended the threat. Czerwinski’s first 11 pitches of the game were strikes. He retired the side in order in the first, second, fifth and eighth innings.
Wheaton, which lost twice to Eastern on the final day of the 2002 regional tournament, had gotten complete games and had commited only three errors in its first two tournament wins. The Lyons commited five errors that allowed Eastern to score four unearned runs. Wheaton, which lost three All-Americas from a year ago, started freshmen at catcher, shortstop and center field, as well as at pitcher.
Both of the Lyons pitchers in this game were also freshmen. Righty Bryan Duplissie lost for the first time after four wiins. He have up nine hits and four runs (one earned) before giving way with one out in the sixth to righty Joe White, who got a fly ball before Koch’s RBI single made it 4-2.
Senior Scott Beattie and junior John Ablondi each had two hits for Wheaton. Beattie drove in the team’s runs with a one-out single in the sixth.
In last year’s winners’ bracket final against Wheaton, Czerwinski was driven from the mound in the fourth inning, giving up six hits and four walks and five (earned) runs. Czerwinski moved into second place all-time in starts, one behind former major league John Caneira (‘74). In 77.3 innings this year, Czerwinski has 68 strikeouts and 13 walks with a 1.75 ERA.
