Top-seeded Red Dragons to face third-seeded Trinity for title
Troy, NY -- A sacrifice fly in the tenth inning gave top-seeded Cortland a 4-3 win over Trinity in the tenth game of the six-team, double elimination NCAA Division III Baseball Regional at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy, N.Y. With the victory, the Red Dragons (35-10) force a deciding game with the Bantams (26-10) this afternoon (3pm). The winner will advance to next week’s Division III Championship Tournament in Fox Cities, Wisc.
The winning run came in the bottom of the tenth inning when leadoff hitter Andy Mead reached on an error – Trinity’s 15th of the tournament – and moved to second on a balk. A sacrifice bunt by Cory Haggerty moved Mead to third and the next batter, Jeff Flegler, was walked intentionally. Ben Albright’s sacrifice fly to short right field ended the game.
The Red Dragons got on the board first in the fourth inning when Flegler, a senior, was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a double by Albright. Designated hitter Nate Gagnon knocked home the game’s initial run with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Trinity came right back with a run of their own in the next inning, scoring once with two outs. Bill Wise singled through the left side and Robert O’Leary followed with a base hit to right. An infield single by Jeff Natale scored Wise.
A two-run single by Haggerty in the next inning put Cortland ahead, 3-1, in the fifth inning. Neal Heaton, Jr., and Mead both singled to set up Haggerty’s two-RBI base hit.
Cortland held the two-run lead until the top of the eighth inning when Natale led off with a single to centerfield and the next batter, Jayme Dorr, tied the game with a home run down the left field line.
Sophomore Matt Miller, who pitched the final 1.2 innings (0 hits, 0 runs, 1 strikeout) for the Red Dragons, earned the win to improve to 7-1 on the season. Heaton finished with three hits while Haggerty was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Natale had three hits, a run and an RBI in five at bats for the Bantams, who saw Greg Talpey (1-2) suffer the loss.
