Four-run eighth inning propels MSMC to win in Regional game
Troy, NY -- Mount Saint Mary College scored four runs in the eighth inning to defeat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 7-3, in the second game of the six-team NCAA Division III Baseball Regional at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy, N.Y. The victorious Blue Knights (32-6), the fifth-seed, advance to the winners’ bracket, where they will play either Trinity or Ithaca on Friday at 7pm. The Red Hawks (26-14), the second seed, will face Messiah in an elimination game on Friday at noon.
Rensselaer got the game’s first run in the bottom of the second inning on a sacrifice fly by junior Tim Egan. Dan Quinn was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and he moved to second base on a single by Flynn Cochran. Quinn advanced to third when Ryan Meron walked. Egan’s sacrifice fly to left field scored the Red Hawks’ first run.
The Blue Knights knotted the game in the sixth inning and took the lead in the eighth. Senior Joe Costello led off the sixth inning with a single and classmate Mike Cooper followed with a double, moving Costello to third base. A sacrifice fly to centerfield by Jared D’Aleo scored Costello and tied the game.
Mount Saint Mary tacked on four runs in the eighth inning for a 5-1 advantage. Costello started the stanza with a walk and moved to second on a fielder’s choice. With first and second and no outs, Jerry Puccio laid down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away, allowing one run to score. The next batter walked to load the bases and senior Brian Denisar followed with a single to centerfield that scored two runs. MSMC added one more run on a single to second base by Kevin Rall.
The Blue Knights made it 7-1 with two runs in the ninth inning, including an RBI double by Puccio in the ninth inning for the final margin.
Senior Paul Basdekis was outstanding on the mound, allowing just two runs and seven hits with four strikeouts in the victory. He improves to 11-2 on the season. Junior Jason Mires got the final out with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to earn his third save of the season. Offensively, Rall (2 for 4, 1 RBI) was the only Blue Knights batter with multiple hits.
For RPI, Meron was 2 for 3 and Cochran was 2 for 4 with the bat. Junior Erik Thunell (4-3), who allowed four hits and one earned run in 7.0 innings, suffered the loss on the mound.
