Bantams defeat Ithaca
Troy, NY -- Trinity College got a two-run home run from sophomore Jeff Natale with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Bantams scored once in the eleventh inning on a single by Jayme Dorr to pull out an 8-7 win over Ithaca in the third game of the six-team, double elimination NCAA Division III Baseball Regional at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy, N.Y. With the victory, third-seeded Trinity (24-9), who committed seven errors, advance to the winners’ bracket, where it will play Mount Saint Mary, the fifth-seed, on Friday night at 7pm. The Bombers (24-11), the fourth-seed, will play top-seeded SUNY Cortland at 3:30pm on Friday.
With two outs in the ninth, Trinity sophomore pinch hitter Robert O’Leary singled off Ithaca closer Jonathan Beckerman to extend the inning. Natale, a sophomore second baseman, came up and drilled a line drive home run to leftfield to send the game to extra innings. Two innings later, Nick Baldelli singled and was bunted over to second by O’Leary. Baldelli then advanced to third on a wild pitch before being singled home by Dorr. I
thaca jumped out in front, 3-0, with single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. In the second, the Bombers scored one run on three Trinity errors. The next inning, junior Joe Cavano led off with a single, stole second base and scored on a single by senior Kyle Wilkins. Ithaca made it a three-run lead in the next inning when Craig Nels, a junior, singled and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly Peter Canestrari.
After being held without a hit and committing four errors in the first 3.5 innings, the Bantams struck for three runs to tie the game in the fourth inning. With one out, Dorr, a senior, doubled down the leftfield line. He scored on a single to right field by Kurt Piantek, who entered the game with a .523 batting average, and a base hit by Rob Dolliver put runners on first and second base. An Aaron Goldstein double to right centerfield with two outs scored both runners to knot the game.
The Bombers regained the lead on a pair of back-to-back hits in the seventh inning. Designated hitter Marty O’Boyle singled with one out and Wilkins doubled him home, chasing Trinity starter Kevin Tidmarsh, who entered the game with a 9-0 record. Against reliever Kyle Cox, Nick Pyzikiewicz knocked in Wilkins with an infield single and the Bombers made it 6-3 with a run by Pyzikiewicz on a wild pitch. I
thaca tacked on a single run on a bases loaded walk to Pyzikiewicz in the eighth inning but the Bantams got two runs back on a two-run home run to leftfield by Piantek in the bottom of the inning.
For Trinity, Piantek was 2 for 5 with two runs and three runs batted in. Craig Tredenick (2-2) pitched 1.2 innings of relief to earn the win.
Kyle Sottung, a junior, pitched 7.2 innings, allowing five runs and a walk to go with ten strikeouts for Ithaca. Beckerman suffered the loss to fall to 3-1. Offensively, Cavano (3 for 5, 1 run) and Wilkins (3 for 6, 1 run, 2 RBI) both had three hits to lead the Bombers.
