Falcons eliminate Mount Saint Mary, will face Cortland in next gam
Troy, NY -- Falcons eliminate Mount Saint Mary, will face Cortland in next game Messiah College jumped out to an early lead and eliminated Mount Saint Mary, 11-1, in the eighth game of the six-team, double elimination NCAA Division III Baseball Regional at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy, N.Y. With the victory, the Falcons (24-14) move to tonight’s game nine against Cortland State in another elimination game (7pm). The winner of that game will play Trinity on Sunday in the championship round (12pm), where they will need to win twice to advance to next week’s Division III Championship Tournament.
The Falcons, who finished with 18 hits, jumped on the board first with a run in the top half of the first inning. Chris Regan’s sacrifice fly to center field scored Keren Morgan, who had walked to lead off the game.
Messiah broke it open in the second inning with a suicide squeeze by Peter Dyson, scoring Mathew Allen, who in turn scored on Andrew Bagley’s double to right-center field. Another double by Joshua Clabaugh scored Bagley and chased Blue Knight starter Jim Pomeisl. Glen Visconti came on in relief, but was not helped as a throwing error scored Clabaugh, and another double, this one by Tyler Hollenbach, scored Morgan giving Messiah a 6-0 lead.
Mount Saint Mary got a run in the fourth inning without the benefit of a hit. Three batters walked, including Jared D’Aleo, who eventually scored on a wild pitch. Allen, a freshman, put the Falcons ahead by seven runs with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning. Regan, who had doubled to left center, scored ahead of Allen on the homer.
Messiah tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Tyler Hollenbach. Mount Saint Mary scored twice in the ninth inning for the final margin.
Falcons starter Kyle Brobst (6-2) was outstanding, allowing just one run and two hits with five strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work. Offensively, Hollenback was 3 for 5 with three RBI and Allen was 3 for 5, including the home run, with two runs and two RBI.
For the Blue Knights (32-8) starter Jim Pomeisl suffered the loss to fall to 4-3.
