Hickory, NC -- The Captains repeated at NCAA South Region Champions Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 11 inning win over Thomas More to advance to their second straight Division III College World Series.
With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 11th, the Captains' Chris Phaup singled to left center scoring Jeremy Elliot from second and giving Christopher Newport its second-straight South Regional championship.
Both teams scored their first run as a result of errors. Christopher Newport scored first to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third after a throwing error by Thomas More third baseman Dan Buchwald. After advancing to third on the error, Jayson Basanes scored when Matt Lewellen followed with an RBI-single up the middle.
The offense for Thomas More was limited to just three hits through the first six innings as Captain starter Eben Brower totaled eight strikeouts. Brower, just a freshman, was named the regional tournament Most Outstanding Player as he finished the game totaling 11 strikeouts in 10.0 innings while scattering eight hits and allowing no earned runs.
In the top of the seventh, Thomas More's Bobby Kinkade reached on a fielding error by Captain first baseman John Corbin and then advanced to second on a throwing error by Corbin. Freshman Brad Thoma then doubled down the left field line to score Kinkade and tie the game 1-1.
Neither team was able to score again until Phaup's single in the 11th as both team's had dominant pitching performances. For Thomas More, freshman Stephen Hatton threw 7.0 innings, allowing just five hits and one walk while not allowing an earned run. Before surrending the game-winning RBI, senior Matt Fritsch had retired 10 of the 14 batters he faced, striking out three and walking just two while allowing only one hit in 3.1 innings.
The Saints threatened in the 10th when freshman Chris Sheppard, who worked through injury all season, led off the inning with a pinch hit single up the middle. After sophomore Nick Pieczonka sacrificed Sheppard to second, sophomore Scott Vetter moved him to third on a ground out to second. With the go-ahead run on third and two outs, sophomore Noah Welte flied out to left field to end the inning.
In the 11th, Jeremy Elliott led off with a bunt single advanced to second when Ricky Medina moved him over on a sacrifice bunt. Thomas More then intentionally walked Matt Turner when Chris Phaup delivered a hit to the left-centerfield gap to score Elliott from second base.
Jayson Basanes was 2-for-4. Brower was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. He was joined on the All-Tournament Team with Cary Bruner, Turner and Phaup. For their efforts, freshman catcher Fred Riess and sophomore outfielder Noah Welte were named to the South Regional All-Tournament team. Riess led all catchers in the regional, batting .368 with two doubles and four RBI while Welte led all outfielders with an average of .444, finishing with the second-highest hit total of eight with two doubles and a slugging percentage of .556.
CNU is now 31-7 and advances to Grand Chute, WI to participate in their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III World Series with action starting Friday, May 23-27.
