Hickory, NC -- CNU’s baseball team defeated VA Wesleyan 6-5 Saturday evening to advance to the NCAA South Regional Championship game for the second straight year.
Chris Phaup led the offensive attack going 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and two runs scored.
Brandon Haywood started the game and went just 1 1/3 innings allowing five runs, three earned on five hits while walking three.
The story was freshman Steve Mingee who came in and threw 5 2/3 innings of scoreless ball while allowing two hits, one walk and striking out five en route to picking up his first collegiate win. Jason Brown threw the final two innings giving up two hits to pick up his fifth save of the season.
Jayson Basanes scored the game’s winning run on an attempted double play.
The Captains are now 30-7 overall and will play Thomas More (KY) Sunday at 1 pm. If Thomas More wins the first game, these two teams will meet again immediately following game one.
