Orange, CA -- The second-seeded George Fox University (Ore.) claimed the first game of the Division III West Regionals with a 4-2 win over Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (Calif.) to move into the winner’s bracket in the four-team tournament.
The Bruins used RBI singles from David Peterson and Josh Sargent to take a 2-1 lead in the third inning, a lead they would not relinquish behind a strong pitching performance from George Fox starter Mike Beck. Beck, who entered the game ranked tied for ninth in Division III with nine victories, allowed just five hits in his third complete game of the season. He also moved into a tie for the team lead in victories at 10-0.
The Sagehens, who rank third in Division III in offense an average of 10.3 runs per game, stuggled to muster any kind of offense of Beck. They struck first on an RBI single by Robert Ruiz in the second inning, driving home Brad Carmody who had lead off the inning with a double, but managed just four hits over the final seven innings.
